That little red-headed orphan was right. We weren't too sure after last night's dismal showing against the Orioles. The good news is that we don't have to wait 24 hours to, hopefully, get our first win.
A.J. Burnett goes against rookie Alfredo Simon in a 1:35 pm EDT start. You really hate to face a guy you haven't seen before when you really need a win. Koji Uehara is also a rookie, but he was an established pitcher in Japan. That being said, the Yankees looked pretty pathetic at the plate, leaving a runner in scoring position for five straight innings, four of which had Uehara on the mound.
The key, of course, this afternoon is for Burnett to give the Yankees some inning and a good start. Otherwise Joe Girardi may not last the week.
Orioles vs. Burnett
Aubrey Huff 7-45 (.156) 11 K
Cesar Izturis 1-10
Adam Jones 2-11 5 K
Nick Markakis 8-24 (.333) 2 RBI
Melvin Mora 5-20 (.250) 1 HR 6 RBI
Brian Roberts 8-27 (.296) 2 HR 3 RBI 4 SB
Luke Scott 3-6 2 BB
Ty Wiggington 3-13 1 HR 3 RBI
Chad Moeller 1-4
Burnett is 7-1 in nine career starts against the O's, with a 4.97 ERA. He's struck out 57 in 58 innings. He's even better at Camden Yards, going 3-0, 3.91 in four starts.
The Yankees haven't loss three straight to start a season since 1998. And no, we're not going to make that comparison.
