The Scranton Yankees split a weekend pair with the Pawtucket Red Sox, dropping Saturday's game 7-1 before coming back on Sunday with a 7-3 win.
Steven White took the loss on Saturday after giving up 6 runs in 3.1 innings pitched. The big blow was a grand slam by Paw Sox outfielder Chris Carter. The Yankees manged just 6 hits, with Greg Porter and Chris Stewart picking up 2 apiece. J.B. Cox threw 1 scoreless inning in relief.
The Yankees used the long ball to top the Sox on Sunday. Jason Lane hit a 3-run shot, and had a 4 RBI day, and Justin Christian and Nick Green added home runs to help Jason Marquez pick up his 3rd win.
Kevin Russo drove in 2 runs and Zach Kroenke threw 2 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win in Trenton's 4-3 win over New Hampshire on Saturday. Austin Jackson appears to have broke out of his recent slump, going 5-9 in his last 2 games.
Sunday's game was suspended in the 4th inning due to rain with the Fisher Cats leading the Thunder 1-0. No word on when the game will be concluded.
The Tampa Yankees lost to the Ft. Myer Miracle Saturday, 3-2, but the big story was the return of starting pitcher Christian Garcia. Garcia had been shut down with a shoulder injury during spring training and had been slowly working his way back. He had a decent pitching line (4.2 IP 6 H 1 ER 1 BB 6 K), but the Yankees could only manage 5 hits.
Tampa started a 4-game series with the Vero Beach Devil Rays (why have they not dropped the Devil?) on a positive note Sunday, winning 5-1. Mike Dunn had control issues, but limited the Rays to 1 run in 6 innings for the win. Grant Duff closed things out with 3 excellent innings of relief for his 1st save of the season. Josue Calzado smacked a 2-run home run and Luis Nunez added a pair of doubles and an RBI.
Saturday was a tough day for Charleston RiverDogs closer Jonathan Ortiz. Protecting a 2-1 lead in the 9th, he committed a crucial error that helped lead to 4 unearned runs and a 5-2 RiverDogs loss. Lance Pendleton (5 IP 2 H 0 R 4 BB 8 K) gave the Dogs a solid start, but the offense couldn't generate much against the Asheville Tourists.
Charleston salvaged the final game of the 3-game set on Sunday with a 3-1 win. Jesus Montero drove in his 33rd and 34th runs of the season (2nd best in the SALly league), and Noel Castillo allowed just 1 hit over 6 innings for his 4th win of the season.
