Minor League Weekend Recap - 5/25

Indianapolis took a pair from the Scranton Yankees on the weekend due to some bad starting pitching and shaky Yankees defense. Dan McCutchen's Triple-A debut didn't go so well. The right-hander allowed 4 runs, 3 of them earned, on 10 hits in 6.1 innings after the Yankees had built a 3-1 lead. The Indians went on to a 6-3 win. Wilson Betemit continued his injury rehab with a couple of hits including a home run.

Sunday's outcome wasn't any better Jeff Marquez was hurt by 3 Yankees error, including one of his own in the Indians 6-4 win. 3 of the 6 runs allowed by Marquez in 6 innings were unearned.

Al Aceves is loving life in Double-A. The Trenton Thunder right-hander threw 7 scoreless innings in his Thunder debut on May 20. He topped that on Sunday with a complete game 4-hit shutout of the Altoona Curve. Aceves didn't walk a batter, struck out 6, and got 13 outs via ground balls. The 25-yr old, who was pitching in the Mexican League last year, 5-1, 1.57 in 10 starts between Tampa and Trenton. Edwar Gonzalez drove in the game's only run in the 4th inning.

Sunday's win finished a great pitching weekend for the Thunder. On Saturday George Kontos allowed just 2 hits over 7 innings in the Thunder's 11-2 win. Mark Melancon finished the game by retiring all 6 men he faced. Edwar Gonzalez hit his 2nd home run and Kevin Russo drove in 3 runs.

Tampa allowed the tying run before picking up the win when Tim Battle doubled and scored on a Cubs error. Kevin Whelan blew a 2-0 lead, but prevailed 3-2 over the Dayton Cubs on Sunday. Josh Schmidt pitch the 9th to earn his 1st save for the Yankees.

Tampa's only loss in the 4 game series was a 4-2 defeat to Dayton on Saturday. Ryan Pope got roughed up for 3 runs in 3 innings.

The Charleston RiverDogs 4-game winning streak came to a screeching halt this weekend when they lost a pair to the Augusta Green Jackets. The Dogs managed 8 hits, but only 1 run in Saturday's 4-1 loss. Jesus Montero was 2-3.

On Sunday, the Dogs lead 2-0 early, but fell 9-4 as Zach McAllister got smacked around to the tune of 9 runs in 5.1 innings. Only 4 of those runs were earned due to a pair of Branon Laird errors. Walt Ibarra had 2 hits and an RBI in the losing cause.
