Phil Hughes was hoping to bounce back from last Friday's rough start when he went against the Pirates tonight in Bradenton, but was smacked around. Hughes allowed home runs to Nate McLouth, Ryan Doumit, and Chris Gomez and was tagged for 7 runs, 6 earned in 4 innings of work. Hughes allowed 7 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3. The Yankees are leading 12-9 in the bottom of the 8th.
After sailing through his first 3 appearances (one vs. USF), Hughes has allowed 10 earned runs in his last 6.2 innings. Outside of Mike Mussina, the starting rotation hasn't been putting up good numbers for over a week.
The Yankees bats had plenty of life tonight- home runs by Jorge Posada, Nick Green, and Chad Moeller have helped pace a 15-hit attack.
