Shelley Duncan, Alex Rodriguez, Jesus Montero, and Wilson Betemit slugged home runs as the Yankees rolled to a 9-3 victory over the Phillies in Clearwater this afternoon. Chien-Ming Wang retired 6 of the 7 hitters he faced as the Yankees won their first official game of the spring.
Duncan had a monster day, belting a 3-run home run in the first, and later adding a 2-run double that hit off of the top of the wall. A-Rod's home run followed a 3-RBI day against USF on Friday.
For the most part, the Yankees pitching was stellar once again. Billy Traber, Jon Albaladejo, Heath Phillips, and Russ Ohlendorf each tossed a scoreless inning. Darrell Rasner struggled with control, giving up a run on 2 hits and walks in his one inning of work. Chris Britton was touched for an unearned run, and Dan Giese surrendered a solo home run in his 1 inning.
The Yankees banged out 14 hits including a pair of hits by Chris Woodward, who is battling for a utility spot.
The Yankees and Phillies play again on Sunday in Tampa. YES will telecast their first game at 1:05 pm.
