The Weak Ahead

No, that's not a typo. With 3/5 of the starting rotation and Hideki Matsui on the DL, it's pretty appropriate. Raise your hands if you're still pissed off about yesterday's loss. Yeah, me too. I also found it sadly ironic that the only player who wears #42 regularly would lose a game on Jackie Robinson Day. Now to move on.

You couldn't pick a much worse stretch to be short on starting pitching. After today's off day (for those of you not on the east coast, it's raining and SNOWING here), the Yankees open a 3 game series with the AL Central contending Cleveland Indians. Then the Bombers fly up to Boston for a 3 game set with those miscreants, and down to Tampa for a quick 2 game series with the Rays. The month finishes out with 5 games at home - 2 with Toronto, 3 with Boston. Hopefully by then Chien-Ming Wang is back.

Alert the Media

Doug Mientkiewicz singled thru the right side yesterday. He's now 1 for his last 25 and is hitting a whopping .138. With Josh Phelps at 2-10, the platoon is hitting a nice .154. No, we didn't need Shea Hillenbrand.

Melky Cabrera appears to be getting some better swings at the plate. He was 1-3 with a sac fly yesterday and is up to .190.

Jason Giambi continues to be a model of inconsistency. He's hitting just .205 with 3 extra base hits. Giambi had a torrid April last season, hitting .344-9-27 with 1.407 OPS. It may be time to get Giambi in there at 1st base until he gets his swing going.

Going, Going, Gone

A-Rod continued his hot hitting over the weekend, going 5-12 vs. the A's. That included his major league leading 7th HR. He drove in a run on Sunday with a sac fly that nearly got out of the park. His OPS is a gawdy 1.430.

With every good at-bat, I am more and more convinced he'll be walking after this season.

Hip Hip Jorge

Jorge Posada's fast start as has gotten lost in A-Rod's start and pitching injuries. After a 2-hit game on Sunday, he's batting .366 with a home run, 8 RBI and 3 doubles, and has a nifty .934 OPS.
