In May, 2005, the Yankees called up Robinson Cano and Chien-Ming Wang in hopes of injecting some life into the ball club. They've been mainstays of the team ever since. Now another player has the same opportunity, though he comes with a lot more expected him than Cano and Wang combined.
The Yankees front office went against their initial plan and have decided to call up Phil Hughes to start Thursday night against the Toronto Blue Jays. Hughes is coming off his best start at Triple-A Scranton, where he was 2-1, 3.94.
What will make this scenario even more interesting is how the weather plays a factor in all this. Rain is expected for Wednesday and Thursday. If a rain out does occur, will the Yankees expose Hughes to the Red Sox-Yankees mania next weekend, or skip his start.
No matter what happens, the future has been moved up quite a bit.
