Minor League Recap - 5/16

With the Yankees failures at the back end of the rotation, it seems like everyone in the organization is now auditioning to get a shot at the #5 starter spot. The Scranton Yankees were to face the Louisville Bats last night, but were rained out. And despite reports to the contrary, Dan McCutchen was NOT elevated to Triple-A from Trenton. The rainout will be made up as part of a doubleheader today with Dan Giese and Kei Igawa getting the starts. Reds top prospect Homer Bailey will be getting one of Louisville's starting assignments.

According to Scranton beat writer Chad Jennings, Alan Horne will pitch in an extended spring training game on Monday.

The Thunder did play last night though and Jason Jones improved to 6-0, 2.20 with a masterful 7 inning performance. Mark Melancon made his first appearance since his bump up from Tampa and struck out 4 in 2 scoreless innings of work. The Thunder pounded Red Sox prospect Justin Masterson 7-1, behind 3 RBI from Ramiro Pena, and a 3-hit 3-runs scored night from Chris Malec. You can get more details on the game from beat writer Mike Ashmore.

Tampa blew a 5-4 lead in the 9th and lost to the Ft. Myers Miracle in 10 innings, 6-5. Tim Battle homered for the Yankees and Luis Nunez drove in 3 runs.

Zach McAllister struck out 11 in 7 innings of work to help the Charleston RiverDogs edge the Greenville Drive 2-1. David Williams and Jesus Montero each drove in a run and Jonathan Ortiz picked up his 11th save.

Charleston starts a big weekend series tonight with the Asheville Tourists. Dellin Betances gets the start for the Dogs.
