The
Padres have agreed to a trade that will bring them a new center fielder in Jim Edmonds. In return,
San Diego will send the
St. Louis Cardinals' Single-A third baseman
David Freese. The Cards will also help defray the cost of Edmonds $8 million salary, but sending $1 million the Padres' way.
Bud Selig will have to approve the deal due to the cash involved.
After spending his first 7 seasons with the Angels, Edmonds has spent the last 8 in St. Louis, winning a World Series championship in 2006.
Freese was a 9th round draft choice out of Southern Alabama, where he was the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year.
