Juan Miranda started off the Arizona Fall League in fine fashion yesterday. The Cuban refugee went 4-5 in his 1st game with the Peoria Javelinas. It included a home run, 4 RBI and 4 runs scored. Kevin Whelan tossed 1 scoreless inning in the Javelinas 14-2 romp over the Peoria Saguaros.
The Hawaiian Winter League is also under way and the Yankees have some representatives. George Kontos, who pitched for Tampa this season, is off to a rough start for the Honolulu Sharks. Of course, pitching in Hawaii isn't so bad. Kontos is 0-2, 7.20, lasting just 5 innings in 2 stars. Kontos' teammate at Tampa, Anthony Claggett, is also on the Sharks squad, and is 1-1, 3.38 in 5 relief appearances.
Austin Jackson, who excelled after his promotion from Charleston to Tampa, is hitting just .216 in 37 at-bats. Brad Suttle, a 2007 amateur draft pick, is on an 0-21 skid thus far. He played in just 3 games for the Yankees rookie team in the GCL.
