Rumor of the Day: Tigers could release Ordonez

The Detroit Tigers have already released one non-producing outfielder this season, Gary Sheffield, and according to the Chicago Sun-Times might unload another.

Magglio Ordonez was a contender for the AL MVP two seasons ago, but is hitting just .241 with 2 HR and 12 RBI in 30 games this season. While it's still early in the year, there is a lot of money riding on the 35-yr old's future.

Ordonez's current contract includes an $18 million option for next season and a $15 million option for 2011. If Mags can reach 540 plate appearances or makes 135 starts this season, the 2010 option becomes guaranteed.

If the Tigers were to release Ordonez, they would have to eat the $18 million remaining on this season's deal.
