Pedroia Beats Out Cano For AL Gold Glove

Everyone knows that Gold Glove Awards don't necessarily reflect the best defensive player at a given position. That being said the top defenders at second base are Boston's Dustin Pedroia and the Yankees' Robinson Cano. Pedrioa topped Cano for his third career piece of fielding hardware. (The Daily News' Anthony McCarron breaks down the numbers.)

Pedroia previously won in 2008 and 2011, while Cano captured the award in 2009 and 2012. The Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals had the most winners with three each, and there were four first time winners.

1B - Eric Hosmer, KC (1)
2B - Dustin Pedroia, BOS (3)
SS - J.J. Hardy, BAL (2)
3B - Manny Machado, BAL (1)
LF - Alex Gordon, KC (3)
CF - Adam Jones, BAL (3)
RF - Shane Victorino, BOS (4)
  C - Salvador Perez, KC (1)
  P - R.A. Dickey, TOR (1)

Hardy, Gordon, and Jones were the only repeat winners with Gordon pulling off a trifecta.

The National League Gold Glover Winners was topped by the St. Louis Cardinals catcher, Yadier Molina, who won his 6th straight award. The Colorado Rockies, Cardinals, and Arizona Diamondbacks had two winners each. Carlos Gonzalez was the only repeat winner from last year. The Rockies' Nolan Arenado was the lone rookie to be honored.

1B - Paul Goldschmidt, AZ (1)
2B - Brandon Phillips, CIN (4)
SS - Andrelton Simmons, ATL (1)
3B - Nolan Arenado, COL (1)
LF - Carlos Gonzalez, COL (3)
CF - Carlos Gomez, MIL (1)
RF - Gerardo Parra, AZ (2)
  C - Yadier Molina, STL (6)
  P - Adam Wainwright, STL (2)

Tex, Cano; Men With the Golden Glove

Mark Teixeira and Robinson Cano collect their 2010 Gold Glove Awards
Mark Teixeira and Robinson Cano would rather forget how the season ended, especially Cano who went from red hot to freezing cold at the plate in a matter of days.

Both players added to their trophy cases though this evening with the announcement that they had won Gold Glove Awards at their respective positions.

Teixeira won his fifth Gold Glove and third as a Yankee. He's the first Yankees first baseman to win at least three awards since Don Mattingly won from 1991-1994 (Donnie Baseball also won from 1985-1989).

Cano, who had his contract option picked up for 2013 yesterday, won his second Gold Glove, with his previous hardware coming in 2010. The only other Yankees second baseman to win a GG, was Bobby Richardson, who earned the award from 1961-1965. (Personally, I believe Willie Randolph got screwed out of some.)

Cano Tops List of AL Gold Glove Winners

Anyone who got the opportunity to watch Robinson Cano play 2nd base this past season knew he had a great chance of winning his first Gold Glove. Today those thoughts came to fruition.

Cano won his first Gold Glove award after a season filled with displays of remarkable range, sparking plays, and most importantly perhaps, consistently making the routine plays.

Cano was joined by shortstop Derek Jeter, who won his 5th Gold Glove, and Mark Teixeira, a 4-time winner. Cano and Jeter became the first Yankees middle infield duo to win the award in the same season.

Adding to their previous awards were pitcher Mark Buehrle, outfielder Ichiro Suzuki, catcher Joe Mauer, and Evan Longoria. In addition to Cano, outfielders Franklin Gutierrez and Carl Crawford each picked up their first award.

Jeter's award, of course, immediately set off a firestorm of discussion on Twitter as does anything the Yankees' captain does.

It's Gold Jerry, Gold

Prior to tonight's Yankees 4-1 win over the Orioles, Mark Teixeira and Derek Jeter received their 2009 Gold Glove Awards.

It was the 4th such trophy for Jeter, while Tex's first in Pinstripes was his third overall.

Jeter, Tex Grab Gold Glove Awards

The Captain and Tex Bring Home the GoldWritten for Baseball Digest Online

A week after winning their 27th World Series title, two New York Yankees have added to their trophy cases.

Team captain, and shortstop, Derek Jeter and first baseman Mark Teixeira have been named Gold Glove winners for the 2009 season.

Jeter, who had a tremendous all around season, was honored for the first time since 2006 and won his fourth Gold Glove overall. Teixeira, in his first season in the Bronx, not only won the AL home run (along with Tampa Bay’s Carlos Pena) and RBI crowns, but picked up his third career Gold Glove award as well.

Teixeira made just four errors this season while posting a .997 fielding percentage. Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, and Robinson Cano may have had more errors themselves, if not for Tex’s stellar play at first base.

Jeter’s eight errors were the lowest total of his career, and his improved range led to a .986 fielding percentage, the best mark at his position.

Joining the two Yankees as AL winners were second baseman Placido Polanco (Det), third baseman Evan Longoria, catcher Joe Mauer (Min), and outfielders Torii Hunter (LAA), Ichiro Suzuki (Sea), and Adam Jones (Bal). Chicago’s Mark Buehrle was the winner among the AL’s pitchers.

Hands of Gold

The annual Gold Glove awards were announced for both leagues. No Yankees received one. I didn't see him play every day, but was surprised to see Adrian Beltre take it over Mike Lowell and A-Rod. Also, there's no one in the NL better than David Wright.

We know that the Gold Glove award is, for the most part, a joke. The same people basically win it every year, even if its not deserved. Any fan of Tino Martinez remembers the year Raffy Palmeiro won it after only playing 28 games at 1st.

Here are the winners...

AL Winners

C - Ivan Rodriguez
1B - Kevin Youkillis
2B - Placido Polanco
SS - Orlando Cabrera
3B - Adrian Beltre
OF - Ichiro
OF - Torii Hunter
OF - Grady Sizemore
P - Johann Santana

NL Winners

C - Russell Martin
1B - Derek Lee
2B - Orlando Hudson
SS - Jimmy Rollins
3B - David Wright
OF - Jeff Francouer
OF - Aaron Rowand
OF - Carlos Beltran
OF - Andruw Jones
P - Greg Maddux (record 17th)
