Indians Flip Red Sox the Byrd

The Boston Red Sox have acquired veteran pitcher, and "unwitting" HGH user, Paul Byrd from the Cleveland Indians for a player to be named later or cash. Byrd has been mediocre at best this season, but is coming off of one of his best starts.

For now he'll take the place of injured Tim Wakefield in the starting rotation and could eventually push Clay Buccholz out when Wakefield returns.

The Master Craftsmen Pre-Game Show

No, we haven't turned in WCBS radio. We just thought it was an appropriate title for a pitching match up that pairs two guys who can't break a pane of glass. Cleveland Indians starter Paul Byrd, yes Michael, we know he looks like Kelsey Grammar, has basically always pitched that way. But it's all new to Mike Mussina, who used to be able to pop a 93-mph fastball in his catcher's mitt. The two battle it out in the Bronx today as the Yankees try to salvage the final game of the 3-game series.

Byrd (1-2, 3.74) has already beaten the Yankees once this season, on April 25 in Cleveland. He wasn't very good that night, allowing 4 runs in 5 innings, but Andy Pettitte was worse in the Tribe's 6-4 win. The game is the sole win on Byrd's resume this season in his 6 starts.

Jason Giambi will most certainly be back in the lineup today, having homered twice off of Byrd in that April 25 contest. Two players that were in that game won't in today's afternoon soire. Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada went a combined 1-8 against the Byrd man of Ohio.

Mussina (4-3, 3.23) has also beaten his opponent once already this season. He seemed to struggled at times, but allowed just 2 runs in 5 innings in the Yankees April 28 5-2 win. Moose comes into today's game with a 3-game winning streak.

Franklin Gutierrez had 2 of the 7 hits allowed by Mussina in the previous meeting. Travis Hafner and Jason Michaels, who has since been designated for assignment, drove in the Indians runs.

Alex Rodriguez worked out yesterday and is expected to go for an MRI at the beginning of next week. If doctors give him the go ahead, he's expected to play in one or two extended spring training games before rejoining the Yankees on May 15.

Fright Night Low Lights

Like biting into unsweetened chocolate, Friday night left a bitter taste in our mouths. The Rangers lead the Penguins 3-0 in their 2nd round NHL playoff game and the Yankees were ahead of the Indians 3-1 at the Jake. Then all hell broke loose. Hours later both teams had gone down to defeat leaving us angry, bitter..okay, you get the idea.

For the Yankees a second straight blown lead meant a two game losing streak. One night after a 3-0 game against the White Sox turned into a loss, the Yankees sent their stopper, Andy Pettitte, to the mound against the Cleveland Indians. The Yankees built their lead on a pair of Jason Giambi home runs. With Pettitte on the hill, it appeared the Yankees would take the first game of the four game series and end their mini 1-game losing streak. Then just as fast as midges can attack, they fell behind and the Indiand went on to a 6-4 victory.

Pettitte retired the first two hitters in the fifth and appeared to be breezing along. Travis Hafner and Victor Martinez stroked consecutive singles and suddenly the Tribe had a rally. Jhonny Peralta made it count when he blasted a hanging breaking pitch into the left field seats for his 5th home run of the season and a 4-3 Indians lead. Franklin Gutierrez then went back-to-back, hitting a his 2nd home run of the year not far from where Peralta's landed. Just like that the Yankees trailed 5-3.

Giambi had taken Indians starter Paul Byrd deep in both the 2nd and 4th innings, the latter with a man aboard. Hideki Matsui quickly got a run back for Pettitte in the 6th, when he took went yard on Byrd for his 4th home run of the year. The blast also sent Indians manager Eric Wedge to the mound to get Byrd and bring in hard throwing left-hander Rafael Perez.

Both Perez and setup man Rafael Betancourt, who is the closer while Joe Borowski is on the DL, have struggled this season, but both dominated last night as they did in the 2007 ALDS. Perez's walk to Robinson Cano would be the only base runner either would allow. Since Melky Cabrera followed Cano's walk with a double play grounder, the two faced the minimum 10 batters over the final 3.1 innings.

News and Notes

The Indians picked up another run in the 6th off of lefty specialist Billy Traber. The last six left-handed hitters that have faced Traber have all reached base safely. It may not be long before Heath Phillips gets a call up from Scranton and takes a shot at the role.

Ian Kennedy goes for the Yankees today and Joe Girardi told the media, "he knows what I want". Kennedy could be ticketed for Scranton very shortly if his struggles continue.

Shelley Duncan has been recalled from Scranton as expected.

Yankees vs. Indians - April 25

The Yankees return to the scene of the crimemidges tonight when they start a four game series with the Cleveland Indians. Like the Yankees, the Indians have started off slowly. Their doubleheader sweep of the Royals yesterday raised their record to 10-12.

C.C. Sabathia was last year's CY Young winner and the Indians had one of the strongest bullpen. However, none of that has come to fruition this year. Sabathia finally won his last start, a 6-inning, 11-strikeout performance in which he did not allow a run. That lowered his ERA considerably...to 10.50. Jake Westbrook has just landed on the DL with an intercostal strain, and erratic closer Joe Borowski is on the shelf with strained triceps muscle.

Thankfully for the Yankees they'll miss the Indians best starter this season, Cliff Lee, unless manager Eric Wedge decides to bring him back on three days rest to pitch in the series finale on Monday.

The strength of the Indians bullpen has been their set up men, primarily Rafael Betancourt and Rafael Perez. Betancourt has temporarily moved to the closer's role and picked up his first save yesterday. But he had been struggling this season in the setup role to the tune of 4.00 ERA and a league average against of .300.

Perez was fantastic last season, a 1.78 ERA and .187 opponents batting average. He also put up a 4:1 strikeout to walk ratio. But this season Perez has been battered around. His ERA is 6.52 and he's allowed 15 hits and 5 walks in 9.2 innings pitched.

The very hittable Paul Byrd (0-2, 4.43) will get tonight's start and the Indians will recall Jeremy Sowers from the minors to go on Saturday.

The last time the Yankees faced the Indians was of course the 2007 ALDS when Fausto Carmona and the Indians pen dominated them. (With the doubleheader yesterday, Carmona would also be going on three days rest should he pitch on Monday.) Joba Chamberlain says he's over the experience, but you can bet he's hoping for no bug attacks tonight. We're sure the Indians fans won't let him forget it.

Yankees vs. Paul Byrd (1-4, 4.44 8 games)

Bobby Abreu 2-5 2 RBI
Melky Cabrera 3-5 1 HR 6 RBI
Robinson Cano 2-8 1 HR 1 RBI
Johnny Damon 3-19 2 RBI

Hideki Matsui 1-5
Chad Moeller 1-6
Jose Molina 1-3
Jorge Posada 3-18 2 RBI
Alex Rodriguez 4-15 1 HR 2 RBI

Indians vs. Andy Pettitte (6-7, 4.50 16 games)

Ryan Garko 1-3
Franklin Gutierrez 1-3
Victor Martinez 2-6

Be Careful What You Wish For

Last year we all wanted to face the Tigers in the 1st round of the playoffs. We all know how that turned out. This year it was lets face the Indians since we want no part of our nemesis, the Angels. So now the Yankees are fighting for their post-season lives and the slumping, battered Angels slinked home, swept by the Red Sox.

Chien-Ming Wang gets a chance to redeem himself tonight for his awful outing in game 1. As for the Indians, again be careful what you wish for. When Eric Wedge announced that Paul Byrd would go tonight, there was a collective yell of "YESSSS" throughout Yankee land. Anyone would rather face Byrd rather than C.C. Sabathia on 3 day's rest...or would they? The big guy threw 114 pitches and maybe he's not up to throwing on 3 day's rest. We'll never know.

Tino Martinez threw out the 1st pitch in last night's ball game. Peter Abraham had a great idea- get Bernie Williams to throw out tonight's 1st pitch.
