CC Gets an FF

Not a good day for CC Sabathia in his start against the Tigers. After a scoreless first, the big left-hander was tagged for 5 runs in the second inning, leaving with 2 outs. Among the hits was a 2-run home run off the bat of Gary Sheffield. The Tigers lead it 7-4 in the 8th.

The Yanks had built a 4-0 lead with a pair of runs in each of the first two innings off of a wild Justin Verlander. The Tigers extended their lead with a pair of solo home runs, including Sheffield's second blast of the game. That home run came off of Al Aceves, who also gave up a long ball to Wil Ramirez.

The Yankees RBI are from Mark Teixeira, Jorge Posada, who DH'ed, and Nick Swisher. Melky Cabrera fell further behind Brett Gardner in the center field battle, going 0-3 before leaving the game. He's now hitting .238 for the spring.

Joba Gets His Groove Back

Joba Chamberlain wasn't worried, at least outwardly, about his wildness in his first two spring starts, but his manager Joe Girardi was starting to get a bit little concerned. Girardi added though, that he would be more concerned if it continued. You can rest easier, Skip.

Chamberlain was on the mark tonight as the Yankees thrashed the Reds, 7-1, in Tampa. The Yankees prized righty allowed a run on three hits over three innings. More importantly, he was in total command of his pitches. Chamberlain didn't issue a walk, while striking out three. The lone run scored when center fielder Brett Gardner misjudged a fly ball with a runner in scoring position.

The remainder of the Yankees pitching was equally effective. Phil Coke, Kei Igawa, Christian Garcia, and Anthony Claggett combined with Chamberlain for 12 strikeouts.

The Yankees offense had a big night too, collecting 14 hits, including home runs by Juan Miranda and Shelley Duncan. Gardner, Cody Ransom, and Ramiro Pena had two hits apiece, and Gardner and Ransom added to their spring resume with an RBI each.

Joba Looks to Take Control

The Yankees play the Reds tonight in Tampa tonight at 7:15. The game will be televised on YES. Joba Chamberlain gets the start for the Yankees and he'll be looking to bounce back from his last start when he couldn't find the strike zone.

It was a rough game yesterday for Ian Kennedy, who gave up 5 runs in 2.2 innings pitched as the Yankees lost to the Blue Jays 6-2. More importantly though, Andy Pettitte faced seven hitters and felt good afterwards. Box Score

Brett Gardner continued his big spring as he battles for the center field job. Gardner hit his third home run of the spring and also added a single. Gardner only has nine home runs in his entire minor league career and none in the majors.

Mark Teixeira also enjoyed a 2-hit game and is hitting .500 this spring.

Mariano Rivera threw 30 pitches in the bullpen and expects to pitch in a game next week.

Help Wanted: Gardner or Melkman

Center field has long been a position of honor and tradition for the New York Yankees, from Joe DiMaggio to Mickey Mantle to Bobby Murcer to Bernie Williams. Who will be next to fill the void?
