It's Here...Um....Maybe

It's Opening Day at last! We made it. Give yourselves all a pat on the back and a congratulatory round of applause. But it's not going to be an easy day. Never mind that CC Sabathia and the Yankees will be locked in a battle with Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers. The weather, she not look so good.

Weather.com forecasts a 35% chance of rain at game time (1:05 pm EDT), increasing to 65% by 3 pm. It then goes between 50% and 60% for the next couple of hours before the skies open up for the rest of the night at 7 pm.

Now normally you would be done by 7 pm but as we have seen in the past, there have been some very long, obnoxious rain delays at Yankee Stadium. My brother and I were among those who sat through a 2 hour monsoon last year. The problem is that Friday's day off looks even worse, so the guess here is that the game will get in. Whether (or in this case maybe it should be weather) or not it's a full game remains to be seen.

Today's Yankees lineup should be as follows:

LF Brett Gardner
SS Derek Jeter
3B Alex Rodriguez
1B Mark Teixeira
2B Robinson Cano
RF Nick Swisher
DH Jorge Posada
CF Curtis Granderson *
C Russell Martin

* = Good news.

As expected, Pedro Feliciano landed on the DL. Luis Ayala beat out Steve Garrison for the final spot in the bullpen, leaving Boone Logan as the lone lefty, and Gustava "not a real" Molina will be the back up to Martin at catcher.

The starting lineup for the Tigers is as follows:

CF Austin Jackson
2B Will Rhymes
RF Magglio OrdoƱez
1B Miguel Cabrera
DH Victor Martinez
LF Ryan Raburn
SS Jhonny Peralta
3B Brandon Inge
C Alex Avila

2009 ALDS - Game 2 Lineups

No surprises in the Yankees lineup (since we already knew about Molina)

SS Jeter
LF Damon
1B Teixeira
3B Rodriguez
DH Matsui
RF Swisher
2B Cano
CF Cabrera
C Molina

P Burnett

For the visiting Twins:

RF Span
SS Cabrera
C Mauer
RF Kubel
1B Cuddyer
LF Young
CF Gomez
3B Tolbert
2B Punto

P Blackburn

Only Johnny Damon (3-11) and Nick Swisher (3-12) have double digit at-bats against Blackburn. Mark Teixeira is perfect against the right-hander, going 6-6 with a home run and 5 RBI. On the other end, Robinson Cano is 0-8.

Orlando Cabrera has the most at-bats (28) against Burnett, while 8 others have 10 or more. Joe Mauer is 5-13 (.385) with 1 RBI. Among them, Michael Cuddyer 2-13 (.154), Jason Kubel 5-17 (.235), and Delmon Young 3-10 (.300).

2009 ALDS - Game 1 Lineups

The time for surprises are out the window. The Yankees lineup is pretty obvious.

SS Jeter
LF Damon
1B Teixeira
3B A. Rodriguez
C Posada
2B Cano
RF Swisher
CF M. Cabrera
P Sabathia

For the Twins:

CF Span
SS O. Cabrera
C Mauer
1B Cuddyer
RF Kubel
LF Young
DH Harris
3B Tolbert
2B Punto

P Duensing

The Yankees have had limited exposure to Duensing, with Robinson Cano and Mark Teixeira both 1-2. No other Yankee has more than one at-bat against the rookie left-hander.

Sabathia, on the other hand, has had great success against this Twins lineup.

Span 1-3
O. Cabrera 5-33 (.152)
Mauer 5-23 (.217)
Cuddyer 11-52 (.212)
Kubel 0-2
Young 3-15 (.200)
Harris 3-15 (.200)
Tolbert no AB
Punto 6-36 (.167)

That's a combined 34-214 (.159)

2008 All-Star Preview

Actually, there's not much to preview. AL vs NL - determines home field. Lots of boredom between first pitch and last. There will be a moment of silence for Bobby Murcer, Sheryl Crow will sing the National Anthem, and Josh Groban will sing "God Bless America" during the 7th inning stretch (where's Ronan Tynan?). Hopefully the world will not hear "Cotton Eyed Joe".

Here are the starting lineups.

The Daily Yankeeland

It was a short work out day for the Yankees, with the team taking most of the day off in preparation for tomorrow's exhibition opener with the U. of South Florida. One person totally psyched about it is Tino Martinez. As we mentioned the other day, Tino is not only a Yankees spring training instructor, but also a volunteer assistant coach at the university, where his brother in-law is the head honcho.
"I'm going to wear my Yankee uniform to remind my college guys I used to play baseball as well," said Martinez, who is in camp with the Yankees as a guest instructor for the first time.
Tino's very excited about the impact the game could have on recruiting for school's team.
"They've really been building the USF baseball team the last couple of years, so this game is huge," Martinez said. "Just to have the chance to play on the same field as these guys, as [Derek] Jeter and A-Rod, it's something they'll never forget in their lives -- once in a lifetime. It's going to be a lot of fun."
Courtesy of Peter Abraham, here's the lineup and pitching plans for tomorrow:
Johnny Damon LF
Derek Jeter SS
Bobby Abreu RF
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Jason Giambi 1B
Jorge Posasa C
Robinson Cano 2B
Shelley Duncan DH
Melky Cabrera CF

Joba Chamberlain (2 innings)
Ian Kennedy (2 innings)
Phil Hughes (1 inning)
Kei Igawa (1 inning)
Jefff Marquez (1 inning)
Alan Horne (1 inning)
Chase Wright (1 inning)
