40 years ago today, June 8, 1969, Mickey Mantle was honored before a packed house in Yankee Stadium.
Mick had hung up his cleats at the end of the 1968 season, setting up the day's events.
It included a speech in which Mickey said that he couldn't understand how Lou Gehrig, knowing he was dying, could stand there and say he was the luckiest man on the face of the earth. Mickey said he now understood how Lou felt.
Mickey's number 7 was retired and he was presented with a plaque. Yankees also made up for a gross oversight by presenting a plaque to Joe DiMaggio as well. The Mick took one last ride around the Stadium, waving to those in attendance.
