The NY Post is reporting that Melky Cabrera, slumping since the beginning of May, has been demoted to the Scranton Yankees and Brett Gardner has been recalled. The Yankees were clearly in need of a shake up and though Gardner did not hit in his first time around, his speed brings another element to the team. It also gives the team a chance to see if he's capable of being the every day center fielder for the last two months of the season.

No reason to pretend
We knew it had to end some day, this way.
We never got the chance to comment about Monday night's debacle as we were in the the city that never sleeps all day yesterday. The only comments we'll make regarding Monday's loss are: 1) Why the hell did Joe Girardi leave Damaso Marte in after he loaded the bases with walks, and 2) If the ball really hit Ian Kinsler, then it hit him out of the box, not in, and he should have been out. Crappy umpiring is, unfortunately, something we've become accustomed to.
As for last night, Andy Pettitte let his teammates down for the second straight start. He got tagged for a 2-run home run by Josh Hamilton in the first inning and a 3-run double by Chris Davis in the 7th.
The Yankees offense was lifeless against rookie left-hander Matt Harrison, before finally coming up with a Richie Sexson grand slam in the 8th that made for an interesting finish. But after Derek Jeter lead off the 9th with a walk against Eddie Guardado, Bobby Abreu went down on strikes and Alex Rodriguez hit into a game-ending double play.
The bullpen imploded again as well. Dave Robertson, who started out so well, had his third straight bad game, and Brian Bruney showed that he doesn't look ready to pitch at the major league level yet.
The Yankees also dropped another game back in the East (6.5) and the Wild Card (3.0).
On the injury front, Joba Chamberlain is headed to see Dr. James Andrews to see what's wrong with his shoulder. This can't be good. Ian Kennedy will reportedly take his next start.

Sexson and Yanks Coming Out Swinging
If last night was any indication of how the Yankees will perform in the second half of the season against left-handed pitching, things should be all right. Newly acquired Richie Sexson had an RBI single plus a walk in 4 plate appearances and Robinson Cano hit a big 3-run home run to catapult the Yankees to a 7-1 win over the Oakland Athletics.Mike Mussina (12-6) turned in another gem, allowing one run over 6 innings to earn his 12th win, and the bullpen continued to excel with 3 scoreless innings. Mussina fell behind 1-0 in the 1st inning, but in the Yankees half of the inning, their newest acquisition paid immediate dividends.
Bobby Abreu started things off with a one out single against starter Greg Smith and Alex Rodriguez followed with a walk. Then it was Sexson's turn. The 6'8" 1st baseman, released by the Mariners on July 10, singled to center field to score Abreu with the tying run.
In the 3rd, a single by A-Rod and a walk to Jorge Posada put two men on with just one out. Smith struck out Sexson, but Robinson Cano drove a pitch into the right field seats for a 3-run home run and a 4-1 Yankees lead. The Bombers drove Smith from the game an inning later when Abreu and A-Rod stroked RBI hits for a 6-1 advantage. A-Rod would cap the night off with his 20th home run of the season, and the 538th of his career, in the 6th inning.The A's put two runners on against Mussina in both the 4th and 5th innings, but he escaped the former with an inning ending strikeout and the latter with a 4-6-3 double play. He threw 93 pitches on the night, scattering 9 hits and didn't walk a batter, while striking out 6. It was also career win number 262.

The Yankees held a moment of silence for Bobby Murcer prior to the game and the scoreboard outside the Stadium also honored him.
The Yankees sent Billy Traber down to Scranton before the game and moved Phil Hughes to the 60-day DL to make room on the 25 and 40 man rosters for Richie Sexson.
A-Rod's home run was his 40th against the A's, the most by any active player.
The Yankees bullpen has posted a 1.51 ERA over the past 17 games with a 3:1 strikeout to walk ratio.

ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the Yankees have reached a tentative agreement with Richie Sexson, who was released by the Mariners last week.The Yankees will only be responsible for a prorated minimum of $390,000 of the $14 million salary he is to receive from the Mariners.

Injuries and roster moves dot today's Around the Horn.
The Richie Sexson era in Seattle is over. The Mariners cut their 6'8" first baseman after 2 years of underachieving. This season Sexson was hitting just .218 with 11 home run and 30 RBI, plus 76 strikeouts, in 74 games. He hit .264-34-107 in 2006, but dropped off to .205-21-63 last season.
The Mariners also placed Erik Bedard on the DL with a bad back.
Mets GM Omar Minaya said that outfielder Moises Alou's season could be over. A torn hamstring could lead to season ending surgery for the injury prone player.
The Indians officially released closer Joe Borowski after he cleared waivers.
Mark Mulder's career could be over after he lasted just 16 pitches in his start for the Cardinals last night. Did Billy Beane ever pull a fast one in that deal.

What was Richie Sexson Thinking?
Richie Sexson instigated a bench clearing brawl after he was hit by a pitch, he was brushed back a pitch didn't come close to him. Kudos to The Big Lead for the find. Pitcher Kason Gabbard, who had just been reactivated, looked like a deer caught in 6'8" headlights.

Winter Meetings Update
Brewers' GM Doug Melvin confirmed that he turned down an offer from Nat's GM Jim Bowden that would have landed him closer Chad Cordero for Richie Weeks. Whatever happened to silent negotiations? Source
The Nats love to go after prospects, especially those that have fallen out of favor. First, Bowden got Lastings Milledge from the Mets. Now it appears he's about to acquire Elijah Dukes from the Rays for a minor leaguer. Source
The Padres seem to be going after every pitcher out there not named Santana. They've reportedly offered journeyman Brett Tomko a 1-year, $1.5 million deal. Source
ESPN.com is reporting that the Dodgers have made a 2-year, $32 million offer to Andruw Jones.
The Mariners are hoping to deal Richie Sexson during the winter meetings, unloading his $14 million salary in the process. We can't imagine the M's getting much back unless they eat the chunk of that deal. Source
