Nova Ramps Up ROY Resume

After all the agita caused by A.J. Burnett's performance and subsequent tantrum, it was a pleasure to watch Sunday afternoon's outstanding performance by Ivan Nova. The result was a 3-0 win over the Minnesota Twins and concluded a 5-2 road trip. One of the leading candidates for AL Rookie of the Year, Nova was at his best in the 5th inning when the Minnesota Twins put two aboard with no one out.

After Jim Thome's lead off single, Curtis Granderson and Nick Swisher nearly collided and missed Danny Valencia's fly ball for a gift double. Nova, not a strikeout pitcher, needed one with two runners in scoring position. Not only did he get one, but he got two. First Nova threw one a third strike past outfielder Rene Tosoni and followed it up by getting Matt Tolbert to chase a pitch out of the strike zone. Drew Butera then hit a harmless grounder to Mark Teixeira and a fired up Nova came out of the inning unscathed.

Nova improved to 13-4, 3.97 and has won his last six starts. Nova picked up the win in his last start despite having allowed seven earned runs in 5.1 innings. In the other five decisions, Nova has a 1.93 ERA, and has struck out 24 compared to seven walks. Overall, the rookie has won his last nine decisions, the first time a Yankees pitcher had done that since Whitey Ford was a pup in 1950. In doing so, Nova put himself at the forefront of the rookie voting along with Angels first baseman Mark Trumbo and Rays pitcher Jeremy Hellickson.

The Yankees wasted some early opportunities against Twins starter Nick Blackburn, who left the game in the 2nd inning with a forearm strain, but not before loading the bases. Lefty Andy Swardzak came back from a 3-0 count to strike out Eduardo Nunez and got Derek Jeter on a hard liner to right.

The Yankees finally broke through in the 6th when Robinson Cano doubled off Phil Dumatrait and came around on fly outs by Nick Swisher and Russell Martin. The Twins put two runners on in the bottom of the 6th, but Nova struck out Thome to strand them. And again the Yankees answered with offense in their half of the inning.

Curtis Granderson hit a deep drive off of Jose Mijares to right-center that appeared would be his 35th home run of the season. But the ball against one of Target Field's high walls and shot between centerfielder Ben Revere and right fielder Luke Hughes. Granderson raced around the bases and was waved home by third base coach Rob Thomson. Granderson slid in well ahead of the throw for an inside-the-park home run. The Grandy Man got his 35th after all to tie Jose Bautista for the MLB lead.

The Yankees weren't done yet though. Mark Teixeira, hitting from the right side, smacked a laser into the left field seats for a 3-0 lead. It was Teixeira's 34th of the season. Nova tired, but finished seven innings before turning things over to the pen. There was some more excitement in the 9th when David Robertson did one of his high wire acts. The Twins put runners on the corners with one out, but D-Rob struck out Jason Kubel for the second out. A Thome walk loaded the bases, but Robertson retired Valencia on a harmless fly to Swisher in right to end the frame.

Notes

Alex Rodriguez was activated prior to the game and went 0-5 in his first game since July 7. Aaron Laffey was sent to the minors to make room on the roster.

Derek Jeter had an infield single his first time up and finished the road trip 14-31 (.452).

The Yankees had Monday off before starting a three game series at home against the Oakland A's.

Factoid from the YES Network; since 2002, playoffs included, the Yankees are 62-20 against the Twins.

Pork Chops and Apple Sauce

Yes, it is a Brady Bunch reference to when Peter was trying to find himself and decided to be Humphrey Bogart reincarnate. It also has to do with last night's Yankees game with the Minnesota Twins.

You probably have heard all about it by now, but in case you haven't, while Javier Vazquez was getting chopped up by the Twins, YES' Kimberly Jones was having her pork chop assaulted. Wait, that sounded really unseamly. More precisely, Kimwas demonstrating a Target Field food item - pork chop on a stick, when a Yankees fan leaned over and took a bite out of the "other white meat" (not Kim's arm). She was disgusted. Announcers Michael Kay and Leiter were disgusted and hysterical all at the same time. And despite Kim's tweet later on that the incident will all be forgotten about when she returns to work next week, the porkchop horror will most certainly live on.

As for the game itself, yeah, that was pretty much a horror show as well. Vazquez reverted back to his pre-Tigers and Mets contests self and was smacked around by the Twins lineup. It didn't help any that the Yankees lineup continued to stagnate. And for a final show stopper, Chad Gaudin marked his return to the Yankees by giving up a 3-run home run to Jason Kubel to put the game completely out of reach.

Vazquez looked uncomfortable most of the night. His fastball continued to be unimpressive and his mechanics and psyche seemed off. He put the Yankees in a 3-0 hole after just two innings and the RISP-less Bronx Bombers, despite 10 hits, couldn't come back.

Robinson Cano did his best to prove otherwise, driving in both Yankees runs with a single in the 4th and double in the 6th. But down 4-2 in the bottom of the 6th, Vazquez allowed a solo home run to Kubel, who was just getting started.

Joe and Mauer and Justin Morneau each reached against the always unreliable Chan Ho Park to start the 7th and two batters later Kubel crushed a Gaudin meatball into the right field seats. Welcome back Chad.

Notes

Some bats are starting to come around a bit. Derek Jeter's two hits last night put him on an 8-18 (.444) streak. Mark Teixeira had his second straight two hit game, though both he and Alex Rodriguez continued to deliver in the big spots.

WP - Aceves (1-0) LP - Breslow (1-2)

Alex Rodriguez homered in his first at-bat this season down in Baltimore, but since then he’s shown more rust than a ‘57 Chevy. A-Rod shook some of the cobwebs off this afternoon and delivered a clutch, walk-off 2-run home run in the bottom of the 11th to give the Yankees a 6-4 win over the Minnesota Twins at the Stadium.

Mark Teixeira, who was 4-4 on the day, opened the inning with a walk. That brought up Rodriguez, who was in a 3-24 skid since that Camden Yards home run. Craig Breslow got ahead in the count with a first pitch strike, but than hung a slider that A-Rod drilled into the left field seats for career home run number 555. A-Rod flipped his bat on the way to first base and flashed a knowing grin to the Yankees’ dugout before circling the bases to an awaiting mob scene at home plate. Al Aceves pitch a scoreless inning to earn his first win of the season.

Joba Chamberlain started for the Yankees and threw a fairly effective game. He allowed just 3 hits in 6 innings and struck out 6, but did walk 4 batters. He left with a 3-2 lead, but the Yankees bullpen quickly put the team in a hole. Justin Morneau hit his third home run in two days, a long shot off left-hander Phil Coke, to tie the game at 3 apiece in the 8th. Later in the inning with 2 outs and a man aboard, Brian Buscher doubled into the right field corner. Michael Cuddyer was waved home by third base coach Scott Ullger and scored the go ahead run as Melky Caberera’s relay throw missed the cut off man.

The Yankees came right back in their half of the 8th. Pinch-hitter Hideki Matsui started the inning with a ground rule double off starter Nick Blackburn. Derek Jeter bunted pinch-runner Ramiro Pena over to third base, but Johnny Damon hit a tapper back to the mound for the second out of the inning. That gave Teixeira the opportunity to continue his best game in a Yankees uniform. He didn’t disappoint- Teixeira’s fourth hit of the game, a hard single to right, scored Pena with the tying run and ended Blackburn’s day.

Teixeira had given the Yankees their first lead of the day, in third inning, with a long home run following two out walks to Jeter and Damon. Trailing 3-1, Joe Mauer took Chamberlain deep to halve the lead in the fourth. It was the second straight game in which Mauer homered, with both balls landing in Monument Park.

Game Notes

The bullpen had an up and down day. Jose Veras got himself in a two on, no out jam in the 7th, but was rescued by Coke. Mariano Rivera threw a pair of scoreless innings and got out of his own jam in the 9th.

Mark Teixeira finished a triple shy of the cycle and raised his average to .238.

Nick Swisher will never be called “Mr. May” by George Steinbrenner. His 0-4 this afternoon dropped him to 4-40 for the month. To make matters worse, he has struck out in 18 of those 40 at-bats.

Sounds like somebody's got a case of the Mondays

It's pouring out, the Yankees just got their asses kicked in Anaheim, and now they must face the tough pitching, playoff contending Minnesota Twins. The Yankees spanked the Twins in three straight at home in their second series after the All-Star break, but at that point the team was feeling good about themselves.

Sidney Ponson goes tonight against rookie Glen Perkins. Do you really think Ponson can put a third straight good start together? Our savior, who would have thunk it, Mike Mussina faces Nick Blackburn on Tuesday, and then John Sterling will attempt to ruin our Wednesday afternoon when Darrell Rasner takes on Kevin Slowey.

Those three Twins' kid pitchers are a combined 25-17 with a 3.97 ERA. They've walked just 63 batters in 351 innings.

Xavier Nady has been one of the few Yankees to make a consistent contribution since his acquisition. After going 0-7 in his first two games up at Fenway Park, the X-Man has gone 19-45 (.422) and is hitting .365 over all. In 15 games, he has 5 home runs and 13 RBI, with an 1.162 OPS. Nady's play is reminiscent of Bobby Abreu's arrival in 2006 when he hit .330 with 42 RBI in 58 games.

The same can't be said for Ivan Rodriguez, who is just 5-18 (.278) with 1 RBI, on a home run, in 8 games. He also doesn't get the opportunity to catch Mussina or Andy Pettitte, since they both prefer Jose Molina behind the plate.

Damaso Marte has been terribly inconsistent, especially if asked to pitch more than one inning. Sunday's game was a perfect example where he threw a dominant eighth, but put the Yankees in trouble in the ninth by allowing a single and a walk. He's been scored on in four of the eight games he's pitched.

With Phil Hughes set to throw 80 pitches in his next minor league assignment, could a major league start be around the corner? We think if he pitches well, they'll give him one more minor league game and then he'll be back with the big club.

Maybe this will lift our spirits.

Yankees Homer Field Advantage

For the first time in over a month the Yankees hit 3 home runs to catapult the team to a 12-4 victory last night over the Minnesota Twins. The win was the Yankees fourth straight and their 8th straight at Yankee Stadium. Alex Rodriguez, Robinson Cano, and Derek Jeter each went deep as the Yankees banged out 16 hits to take the rare laugher.

Sidney Ponson only lasted 5.2 innings, but the Yankees continued to produce runs when he's on the mound. A-Rod had given him a quick 2-0 lead in the 1st inning with his 21st home run of the season and career number 539, but the Twins got it right back against Ponson in the 2nd. Nick Blackburn and the Twins bullpen couldn't hold things in check though, and the Yankees started to break things open in their half of the 2nd inning.

Consecutive one out singles by Melky Cabrera, Jose Molina, and Brett Gardner, the much maligned 7-9 hitters, loaded the bases. Cabrera scored when 2nd baseman Alexi Casilla's throw, off a Johnny Damon grounder, bounced in front of catcher Joe Mauer for an error. Jeter followed with an RBI single and Gardner came home on Bobby Abreu's ground out for a 5-2 lead. A-Rod's single brought home the final run of the inning and chased Blackburn from the game. The Twins bullpen would take a beating though. Cano led off the 3rd with his 8th home run of the season and Damon later added a bloop RBI double for an 8-2 Yankees lead.

With the score 8-3 in the 6th and two men aboard, Joe Girardi sent for Edwar Ramirez, who struck out Casilla for the inning's final out. Any hope of a Twins comeback would end in the bottom of the frame.

Jeter started the inning with a solo home run to right off of Boof Bonser. Abreu followed with a single, which knocked Bonser from the game. Craig Breslow made a doubly bad pitch, walking A-Rod and throwing a wild pitch, on ball four, that sent Abreu to 3rd base. Breslow then wild pitched Abreu home for a 10-3 Yankees lead. He struck out Jason Giambi, but Cano lined a single to center to plate A-Rod and the laugher was on.

News and Notes

Dave Robertson continued to impress with another 1-2-3 inning, including a strikeout.

Robinson Cano is 10-19 since the All-Star break.

Hideki Matsui will give his knee one more chance. If it blows up again, he'll have season ending surgery.

Why must Joe Girardi constantly lie/twist the truth about injuries. He was saying Jorge Posada isn't in pain at the same time Posada was saying his shoulder has hurt him all year.
