Oritz, Romine are FSL All-Stars

Tampa Yankees reliever Jonathan Ortiz and catcher Austin Romine have named to the Florida State League's North All-Star squad.

Ortiz, who recorded 33 saves for the Charleston RiverDogs last season, had struggled for Tampa this season. While he had earned 7 saves, Ortiz posted a 6.14 ERA and was 0-3, and was sent back to Charleston at the end of May.

Romine has split the catching duties the last two seasons, both in Charleston and Tampa, with Jesus Montero. With Montero's recent promotion to Trenton, more of the load should fall on Romine. He's hitting .282 with 6 HR and 28 RBI in 50 games, and is known for his defensive prowess.

Tampa Yankees lose in 9th

Jonathan Ortiz is as reliable as any minor league closer, but the Lakeland Flying Tigers scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Tampa Yankees,5-3.

The Yankees had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the ninth on Jesus Montero's first home run of the season. The Tigers stole home to tie the game before Chris Carlson hit a walk off 2-run home run to win the game.

Jeremy Bleich allowed two runs on six hits in 4.2 innings, with two walks and four strikeouts. Brandon Laird led the Yankees with three hits and an RBI.

Betances Dominant in Tampa Win

All eyes have been on Dellin Betances since the Yankees drafted him out of high school in 2006. The Yankees know what he's capable of and he showed some of it yesterday in Tampa's (FSL) 2-1 victory over the Lakeland Flying Tigers. The Tigers had won the series opener 6-4.

Bettances allowed three hits in six innings, walked two and struck out seven while limiting the Tigers to one run. Jonathon Ortiz came on to pick up the save.

Minor League Recap - 6/13

Tough loss for the Scranton Yankees last night. They blew a 7th inning 3-1 lead and and a 4-3 13th inning lead to the Richmond Braves, losing 5-4. The Yankees took the lead in the 13th when Brett Gardner walked with the bases loaded, but Steven White couldn't hold the advantage in the bottom of the inning as the Braves scored twice. Kei Igawa gave the Yankees a solid start, allowing 3 runs in 6.1 innings and 5 relievers combined for 5.2 scoreless innings prior to the 13th. Former Yankees catcher Sal Fasano homered for the Braves.

For the second straight game, the Trenton Thunder got a great performance from their starting pitcher, but couldn't muster a single run. Jason Jones (8-2, 2.30) went the distance but was saddled with the loss as the Connecticut Defenders defeated the Thunder 3-0. Ramiro Pena had 2 of the Thunder's 8 hits.

Tampa rallied from a 2-run deficit in the 8th inning and went on to beat the St. Lucie Mets, in 12 innings, 5-4. An Andres Perez infield single and a Mets error allowed the go ahead run to score for the Yankees. RBI singles by James Cooper and Seth Fortenberry had tied the game 4-4 in the 8th. Jon Hovis picked up the victory with 2 innings of work.
