Johan Santana is across the Hudson at Shea, Francisco Liriano is working his way back from Tommy John surgery in the minors, and the heart and soul of the team, Torii Hunter, is in Anaheim/LA. But the Twins are known for developing good players and that continues this year.
The Twins don't have scoring power, but their starting pitching and bullpen have helped them to a 28-25 record, 2 games behind the even more surprising Chicago White Sox in the AL Central. The starting rotation has one veteran, Livan Hernandez, and a bunch of kids.
El Duque's kid brother started out like a house afire, going 6-2, 3.88, but he's been pounded in his last 2 starts, both no decisions, against the Royals and Rangers.
Rookie right-hander Nick Blackburn tops the team in ERA, 3.39, while posting a 4-3 record. He's walked just 11 hitters in 71.2 innings.
Glen Perkins, tonight's starter, was worked in as a reliever for his first 23 big league appearances over the last 2 years, but he's back as a full-time starter now. Perkins was called up due to injuries and has been the goods thus far, going 2-1, 2.77 with 16 strikeouts and 4 walks in 26 innings.
Kevin Slowey returned from the DL last night to record his first complete game. He's only 2-4 despite a 3.38 ERA. Slowey is another Twins starter with a great K/BB ratio of 4:1.
Boof Bonser is the lone Twins starter to struggle, so it would seem he would be the likely casualty when Scott Baker comes back from the DL. Bonser has 2-6, 6.16

Cuddyer is hitting just .228-1-19 and spent some time on the DL.

Update 3:25 - Well apparently even Peter Abraham can be wrong. It appears, Vizcaino is indeed signing with the Rockies for that 2 year deal.
Update 2:25 - Luis Vizcaino, rumored to be signing with the Rockies, agreed to a 2-year, $7 million deal with the Brewers.
So what's going on in the minds of the Houston Astros' front office and their fans? They may have suspected that Miguel Tejada would be named in a steroid report- his name had surfaced before- but did they expect it would happen one day after they traded for him? Surely if they had waited they could have gotten him for less than 5 players.
The Astros are also interested in Mark Prior, who happened to be named in the report as well.
Eric Gagne, not surprisingly, was on the list yesterday as well. Are the Brewers still happy they gave him $10 million?

The Blue Jays inked veteran David Eckstein to a 1-year, $4.5 million deal. Oh and in case you missed it, Howie Clark, the Blue Jays infielder that A-Rod yelled, "HAH" at, was named in the Mitchell Report yesterday. Maybe that's why A-Rod was yelling!
The Twins signed Adam Everett, the same day the shortstop was non-tendered by the Astros. Everett, signed to a 1-year, $2.8 million deal, certainly won't help the Twins' lineup.
The Nationals signed Rob Macowiak and Willie Harris, to help strengthen their bench.
The Phillies are looking at Akinori Otsuka to help out their bullpen. Otsuka was non-tendered by the Rangers.
The Rays are working on a deal to bring Cliff Floyd to the AL.
The Cubs are thinking of making a run at Twins' closer Joe Nathan.
The Rangers have signed pitcher Kazuo Fukumori (not to be confused with Fukudome) to a 2-year, $3 million deal, with an option for 2010.

Weekend Hot Stove
It was revealed that the recent offer made by the Twins to Johann Santana was actually more of a replacement contract, than an extension. So in essence, it was a 4-year, $80 million deal that would keep the Venezuelan in Minny thru 2012. Needless to say the Twins were quickly rebuffed by Santana, who will now be shopped heavily by the Twins. Every team will be hot and heavy for the superstar lefty, with the Yankees, Mets, and Red Sox among those making a heavy push.
A spokesperson close to Santana said the 2-time Cy Young award winner would waive his no-trade clause to play for either the Yankees or Mets, and wasn't concerned about switching leagues. Kat O'Brien of Newsday reports that a source close to the Yankees said they are preparing a "good, strong offer", and believe they have the right combination of players and prospects to get the deal done. Talks should heat up when the winter meetings begin on December 3rd. Source
With Francisco Cordero off to Cincy, the Brewers are in need of a closer. One would most likely be acquired via a trade, rather than signing a free agent such as Eric Gagne. Brian Cashman should be calling up Brewers GM Doug Melvin to deal him Kyle Farnsworth. The Yankees could take a pitcher such as David Bush in return.
Having lost out on their pursuit of Torii Hunter, the White Sox are believed to be in pursuit of their former Chisox centerfielder Aaron Rowand. Rowand was dealt to the Phillies prior to the 2006 season in a trade that brought Jim Thome to the windy city. Rowand had a career best 27 HRs and 89 RBI, with more than half of each total coming in hitter friendly Citizens Bank Park. That being said, Rowand's road splits- .299-10-41 - were not bad. Source
The Angels and Marlins have been going hot and heavy on trade talks for the Fish's Miguel Cabrera. The hold up appears to be the Angels holding out of premier prospect Nick Adenhart. With the recent acquisition of Hunter, the Angels have more outfielders than they know what to do with. The Marlins would not want the heavily priced Gary Matthews Jr., but rookie Reggie Willits would probably be part of a deal. Howie Kendrick's name has been the one thrown around most often and the Angels would probably also include catcher Jeff Mathis, filling another of the Marlins needs. Source

All is quiet on the Yankees free agent front- no word yet from either Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada, or their representatives concerning the deals that have been offered. No shock that Posada is waiting until he hits the open market to see what teams like the Mets and Blue Jays have to offer.

Now that reports say that Johann Santana turned down a Twins long term deal, one has to wonder if they'll start to market him now. We think it would still be a big mistake for the Twins, especially if they end up losing Torii Hunter and Carlos Silva to free agency. The Twins would certainly insist on one of the big 3 - and the Yankees would certainly be much more open to it for the 2-time Cy Young winner.

Jon Heyman is reporting that the Twins have made Johann Santana a multi-year offer, but initial follow ups have said Santana said, "no thanks". Most MLB GMs feel that Santana will remain a Twin, at least until the trade deadline, in '08.
Considering the deals that Barry Zito (7-yr, $126 mill) and Carlos Zambrano (5-yr, $91.5 mill) have received, Santana should make $20 mill per season.

The D-Train beat Atlanta last night and is now 12-1 in his career in April.
Johann Santana lost to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays last night, ending his 17 home game winning streak.
Carlos Lee had the 1st 3 HR game of his career in the Astros win over the Phillies. Lee smacked a grand slam and added a pair of solo shots. Jimmy Rollins better get his teammates going. They're now 2-8.
Eric Gagne got into his 1st game of the season and promptly saved the Rangers win against the Mariners.
A-Rod is getting all the attention, but Ian Kinsler smacked his 5th HR last night to tie him for the HR lead.
David Wright's single last night extended his hitting streak to 22 games.
