RHP ALAN HORNE ACTIVATED FROM DISABLED LIST
He will start the second game of tonight's doubleheader vs. Bowie

(Trenton, NJ)- The Trenton Thunder, Double-A Affiliate of the New York Yankees, have announced that RHP Alan Horne has been activated from the disabled list. Horne will start the second game of tonight's doubleheader vs. Bowie at Waterfront Park.

Horne has started three games for Trenton this season, and is 0-2 with a 7.71 ERA. Horne was placed on the disabled list on May 15 (retroactive to May 13th).

In 2008, Horne made eight starts for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (Triple-A) and went 2-3 with a 5.63 ERA. He was placed on the disabled list twice last season, once from 4/11-6/8 with a biceps strain, and also from 7/2-28 with a cracked fingernail. He also made three starts with Tampa, and had a 0-1 record with a 23.14 ERA. In 2007, Horne was named the Eastern League "Pitcher of the Year". He was 12-4 with a 3.11 ERA in 27 starts for Trenton.

The Marianna, Florida native was drafted in the 11th round of the 2005 draft out of the University of Florida.

Trenton and Bowie continue a five-game series tonight from Waterfront Park with a doubleheader. The first game will start at 6:05 p.m. In the first game, RHP Ryan Pope (2-3, 5.26) will start for Trenton. He will be opposed by Bowie RHP Jake Arietta (4-3, 2.98). In the second game, Horne will start for Trenton against Bowie RHP Pat Egan (0-0, 0.00).

The road back to prospect has another detour to the disabled list for Alan Horne. The good news is that it's not arm related. Horne, who had gotten off to a rough start at Trenton (0-2, 7.71) is sidelined by an injured hamstring.

Horne started the season at Single-A Tampa and was promoted to the Thunder on April 30.

The Yankees open a two game series with the Boston Red Sox tonight at the new Stadium (yes, I really still feel the need to say new). Joe Girardi hopes that some home cooking will help exact a measure of revenge for last week’s embarrassing 3-game Fenway Flop. With yesterday’s rain out against the Los Angeles Angels, Phil Hughes will start tonight against left-hander Jon Lester. The brief series concludes tomorrow night with Joba Chamberlain going up against Josh Beckett, who has been hammered for 15 runs in his last two starts. Both games are at 7:05 ET on YES.

When Damaso Marte returned from the WBC, he complained of pain behind his throwing shoulder. He then confessed to pitching through the pain in order to represent his country. To say Marte was awful the first month of the regular season, would be like saying a hurricane is a little drizzle. The Yankees finally placed the lefty, who signed a three year free agent deal in the off-season, on the 15-day DL with shoulder tendinitis. Anthony Claggett has been recalled from Scranton to take his place on the roster.

The Yankees also discovered that Chien-Ming Wang’s hip abductor issue was caused by a weakness in his right foot. Wang hadn’t fully recovered the strength in the foot after last season’s Lysfranc injury, and as a result, strained his hip. Physical therapy, rather than throwing, will now be Wang’s main focus.

Alex Rodriguez played third base over the weekend as he continued his rehab in Tampa. It’s possible that A-Rod could get into some Tampa Yankees games before being activated from the disabled list this week or next.

Timing is everything and it’s no shock that writer Selena Roberts’ unauthorized bio of A-Rod hits the stores today. Very convenient. One person who is not happy about it is Yankees manager Joe Girardi, who questioned the timing as well as the need for the book at all. Girardi talked to reporters prior to yesterday’s scheduled game with the Angels, and gave an unsolicited opinion of the book. Girardi felt that what one does in his or her own personal life does not need to be shared wit the public, especially when that person’s children could be exposed to harmful/hurtful information.

The biggest issues that come out in the book are, of course, non-personal. Accusations of pitch tipping while a member of the Texas Rangers, and steroid use in high school and with the Yankees are the hot items that has caused MLB to further investigate A-Rod’s statements. It’s understandable though that Girardi would lash out. He’s under tremendous pressure to win and he doesn’t need his best player or the rest of his team hurt by distractions.

Two years ago pitcher Alan Horne was near the top of the Yankees‘ prospect rankings. Then came shoulder problems that led to off-season surgery. Horne is back from extended spring training and made his season debut for the Trenton Thunder on Saturday. He struggled his way through a 3 inning, 3 run, 4 walk effort.

Right-hander George Kontos has been promoted from Trenton to Scranton after going 1-1, 2.66 in four starts. He struck out 24 batters in 20.1 innings pitched. I did a Q & A with Kontos prior to this season that you may find interesting.

Pitcher Hopes to Horne in on the Action

Alan Horne heard all the hype last year, just as all of us Yankees fans did. The guy had a great chance to be the next big thing. The next in line after Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain, and Ian Kennedy to have a big impact on the Yankees' rotation. Then Hughes and Kennedy crashed and burned, Chamberlain spent much of the season in the bullpen, and Horne injured his rotator cuff while pitching at Scranton.

Now Horne is headed back to Tampa, he left on Monday, to go at it again. Dustin Kent of the Jackson County Floridian, Horne's native area, spoke with the right-hander about the coming year and last season's disappointment.

About his slight rotator tear:

It was definitely frustrating,” Horne said of his injury problems in 2008. “When you’re as close as I was to pitching in the majors, close to being one of the first guys called up, it’s tough.

“It will be something to drive me to get back to where I was before the injury. The rest will take care of itself.”

“The tear was causing my shoulder to bind up really bad, so he cleaned it up so it would work a little better,” he said. “It feels good so far.”

Horne had the shoulder cleaned up in the off-season and couldn't start his workouts until December, but he's feeling good.

“I feel great so far. I’ve been real pleased with how the rehab’s gone,” he said. “I feel no pain so far. I feel like I’ve got the problem fixed and I can continue to move forward toward my ultimate goal, which is pitching in the big leagues.”

About his disappointing 2008:

“(The injury) was a big struggle for me,” he said. “It wasn’t a huge pain, it was just pretty uncomfortable. My arm wasn’t working like it was supposed to work and it just wasn’t allowing me to extend a long way.

“It took more effort to be able to throw. I was having to work a lot harder to do things I normally do without a problem. Towards the end of the season, my stuff started deteriorating.”

Cox can be selected, though they would have to remain on a team's MLB roster for an entire year or the Yankees would have the opportunity to get them back.

Scranton rallied in the 9th inning for 5-4 win, to salvage the finale of their 4-game series with the Buffalo Bisons. After a walk to Cody Ransom and a single by Eric Duncan, J.D. Closser hit a game tying 3-run home run, his first long ball of the year. Nick Green followed with a walk and moved to 3rd base on Greg Porter's single. Chris Basak's fly ball to right brought home Green with the game winner.

Dan McCutchen was outstanding in his start for the Yankees, allowing 1 run on 6 hits over 6 innings. He also struck out 5. Kei Igawa gave up the 3 runs in the 7th, but was still around in the 9th to pick up the win.

Trenton made it three in a row over the Portland SeaDogs behind another big time effort from Eric Hacker. The right-hander allowed 1 run over 7 innings, scattered 6 hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out 3. He improved to 3-1 to go along with a 1.85 ERA. In 92 innings, between Tampa and Trenton, Hacker has allowed just 19 earned runs. Austin Jackson and Reegie Corona belted solo home runs for the Thunder.

The Tampa Yankees lost a tough one to the Palm Beach Cardinals 4-3. Starter Mike Dunn was charged with 3 runs in 5 innings, and a Yankees late rally fell short. Jose Gil was 4-4 and drove in a pair of runs to lead the Tampa offense.

Jairo Heredia limited the Savannah Sand Gnats to 2 hits over 7 innings as the Charleston RiverDogs won their third straight, 5-3. Heredia allowed 1 unearned run and struck out 6 to improve to 3-2. Austin Romine and Brandon Laird both went deep.

Staten Island won a pair of games with the Aberdeen IronBirds last evening. The Baby Bombers won the conclusion of Sunday's game, which had been suspended in the 2nd inning, 5-3. The game was tied 3-3 in the bottom of the 8th when Jahdiel Santamaria singled in the go ahead run. Melky Mesa, who had earlier homered, added an insurance tally with an RBI single of his own. Walter Ibarra, who had just been sent down from Charleston, homered for the Yankees as well.

The GCL Yankees were knocked around by the GCL Braves, 10-3, as Dellin Betances had another rough rehab outing. Betances was charged with 4 runs, 3 of them earned, on 8 hits in 2.1 innings pitched. Tough rehab assignment for Ryan Pope too, as he allowed 5 runs in 4 innings.
