If King George decides to jettison Joe Torre before the season ends, there are a few candidates on hand, but there's not much to choose from. The latter may actually save Torre's job.
Don Mattingly - no managerial experience, but King George knows he has to get someone the fans like if he beheads the popular St. Joseph.
Joe Girardi - was my choice to take over before the season started. Was the NL manager of the year in 2006, but pissed off his owner. That doesn't look good on a resume, but this is the kinder, gentler rein of King George.
Larry Bowa - Fiery, not very successful manager with the Phillies and Padres. It would actually be hurting the team to remove him as 3rd base and infield coach, because he's done a great job with A-Rod and Robinson Cano.
Tony Pena - Had great success with the Royals in 2003, but poor seasons in '01 and '04, lead him to burn out early in '05. If you can't make it in Kansas City, can you make it anywhere? (my apologies to Frank Sinatra).
Dave Miley - Current Scranton Yankees, managed the Reds from 2003 - 2005, but is not a big enough name for George.
