Spring Training Notes - 3/1

Ah, the first day of March and Spring Training is kicking into high gear. Yogi Berra and Reggie Jackson managed against each other yesterday in the first intrasquad match up of the spring. Mike Mussina, who wouldn't normally being throwing (starters generally don't pitch in intrasquad games), threw 2 shutout innings and felt good afterwards. #1 prospect Phillip Hughes retired all 6 hitters he faced. Johnny Damon went 1-2 and made a sliding catch in center, while Bernie Williams showed off in right, making an impressive over-the-shoulder grab. Kevin Howard, acquired in the Tony Womack deal, had 3 hits. Jackson's collection of mostly minor leaguers topped Yogi's squad, 8-7.

The Yankees will go against the Phillies tomorrow in the first exhibition game of the spring. The 1:15 start at Legends Field will be televised by YES. It will be the fans only chance to see Johnny Damon, Bernie Williams, Alex Rodriguez, and Derek Jeter before they head off to the WBC. Shawn Chacon and Sean Henn are scheduled to throw for the Bombers.

Joe Torre told reporters yesterday that the Yankees are considering converting Scott Proctor to a starting pitcher at Columbus this season. Hopefully that increases his trade value.

Torre also raised some eyebrows - mine - with statements regarding Andy Phillips. Torre pretty much came out and said it will be difficult to find Phillips at-bats, including Spring Training. Sounds like the 1B-DH split between Jason Giambi and Phillips, and Bernie and Phillips, is not to be. Brian Cashman responded to Torre's statements, by saying he has confidence in Phillips as a hitter. That's all well and good Brian, but if Torre's not going to play him, it's time to start looking for a proven bat elsewhere. Bernie will not produce if he's given 400 or more at-bats.

AFTERNOON UPDATES

Randy Johnson has been officially tabbed to pitch the Yankees opening game in Oakland. This doesn't come as any great surprise. It will be the 14th opening day start of the Unit's career.

Gary Sheffield will be the DH in Thursday's game versus Philly. Hideki Matsui will sit out at least the first 2 exhibition games with a sore left knee.
