Yankees Quiet on Rule V Draft

Johan Santana was one of the best Rule V draftees.

The MLB Rule V draft is never as exciting as the entire hot stove process and rumor mill that is associated with it, but occasionally a team can come away with a player that makes a big impact. (e.g. Johan Santana selected by the Marlins from the Astros in '99 and subsequently dealt to the Twins.)

The Yankees were one of just six teams that didn't draft anyone in Thursday's Major League and Triple-A phases. Additionally, the Yankees and the Atlanta Braves were the only teams not to have a player selected from their system. The Braves, White Sox, Rays, Nationals, and Brewers joined the Yankees in not selecting any players.

The top player chosen was Red Sox right-hander Josh Fields (not to be confused with the former White Sox third baseman of the same name) by the Astros.

Check out Baseballnewshound.com for a break down of the day's drafting.

Rule V Draft can provide a gem like Johan Santana.

Welcome Back Kroenke

Zach Kroenke will soon be back in the familiar navy blue and white spring training uniforms worn by the New York Yankees. The 25-yr old left-hander was selected by the Florida Marlins in this past December's Rule V draft, but he was returned to the Yankees today for $25,000.

Kroenke was selected by the Marlins based on his fine 2008 performance, but he was roughed up this spring and wouldn't have made the Marlins out of camp.

Everybody Wants to Rule V the World

The major league Rule V draft kicks off a week today and Baseball America has a good preview of past and present. The latest collective CBA gave teams an added year to protect their young players before they have to be added to the 40-man roster.

Most Rule V drafts don't amount to much- the Yankees grabbed Josh Phelps last year. But the Reds picked up Josh Hamilton and the Royals have their closer in Joakim Soria. And yes, Johan Santana was once a Rule V pick.

Rules for Rule V - At the major league level, teams can select players off the list of available Triple-A players. The cost is $50,000 each and the player selected must remain on the big league roster all season. If a team gives the heave ho, as the Yankees did with Phelps, the original team can have the player back for 25 grand.

The minor league draft is split into 2 phases, one for Triple-A players and another for Double-A. In each case, teams draft one level below the minor league level. The Triple-A phase players cost 12K, while the Double-A phase goes for $4,000 each. It's a good chance to take a player that might pan out for you, especially since you don't have to worry about keeping a player at a particular level.

Baseball America also takes a look at some of the players that could be selected this year and have an impact.
