With a month left in the season it's time to do some speculation on the make up of the Yankees 25-man roster for the post-season. The opponent will likely either be the Detroit Tigers or the Texas Rangers, though either should have little impact on who makes the roster and who doesn't.
Most of the roster spots are obvious, but there are still a few spots up for grabs. Teixeira, Cano, Jeter, A-Rod, Gardner, Granderson, Swisher, Martin, Cervelli, Nunez, Chavez, Jones are the 12 hitters/fielders that are a given.
The pitching staff has Sabathia, Nova, Garcia, Colon, Rivera, Robertson, Soriano, Logan, and Wade for a total of 9.
That's 21 rosters spots taken with four opening to be filled. The Yankees have their four starters, so there's no reason that A.J. Burnett should be on the post-season roster. Phil Hughes could be added as a righty specialist. Perhaps Luis Ayala, the team's current long man might be added to eat innings in case of a blow out. But I think the big surprise here is that Hector Noesi is added over the three of them. The dark horse could be Raul Valdes, a journeyman lefty that was recalled by the Yankees today and will get a chance in September to prove the team needs a second lefty in addition to Logan.
You normally carry 12 pitchers during the regular season, but there's really no reason to go with more than 10, 11 at the most in the post-season, especially in a short series.
On offense Jorge Posada is not a given due to his lack of production. If Jesus Montero shows any thing at all, he'll be on the roster. The Yankees are likely to add another infielder (Ramiro Pena) and another outfielder, likely Chris Dickerson.

Yankees Set ALCS Roster
25-man ALCS Roster
Eric Hinske is out, Freddy Guzman is in. That's the only change in the 25-man roster between the ALDS and ALCS.
The Yankees apparently feel that a guy with additional speed and limited other abilitiesis more important than a guy with some pop and limited other abilities.
Damaso Marte remains on the roster and Brian Bruney remains on the outside looking in. I thought Marte would be dropped with Bobby Abreu being the only lefty on the Angels roster. However, with seven switch-hitters on the roster, Joe Girardi and Brian Cashman must have felt they wanted to have the option of flipping a guy around to the right side. That would be especially true in lefty-friendly Yankee Stadium.

Game 3 - Jered Weaver vs. Andy Pettitte
No truth to the rumor that every pitcher on the Angels has to have a first name beginning with the letter 'J'.
The Yankees are seriously tossing around the idea of a 3-man rotation with CC Sabathia getting three turns- games 1, 4, and 7. If not, Chad Gaudin would like start Game 4. Most likely it will be the 3-man, with Sabathia going on three days, and then full, rest before his subsequent starts.

Post Season Roster Not Set in Stone
The usual suspects will be on the Yankees post-season roster, but there are still a number of question marks for the bench, rotation, and bullpen. Lets take a quick look at each area and see how it shakes out.
Okay, the given - Jeter, A-Rod, Cano, Giambi, Posada, Matsui, Damon, Cabrera, Molina, Mientkiewicz, Betemit, Abreu, Pettitte, Clemens, Wang, Rivera, Chamberlain, Mussina, Vizcaino.
That's 19 players, leaving 6 spots to fill on the bench and the bullpen. And that's assuming Clemens will be able to give it a go.
Of those 6, Shelley Duncan is probably a lock to give the Yankees a right-handed bat off of the bench. That leaves 5 spots, all going to pitchers. The Yankees have already stated that its not likely that Ian Kennedy will be on a 1st round roster. With Mussina seemingly locking down a spot, Phil Hughes may not be needed either. He's certainly not used to pitching out of the pen.
A new rule change may also dictate how the roster is assembled. For the first time, a player may be replaced in mid-series because of an injury. A pitcher would have to replace a pitcher, and a position player would take the place of one of his colleagues. The injured player would not be allowed to participate in the next round.
With the new rule, the Yankees could opt to leave Hughes off the roster initially, and add him later if Clemens can't go or Mussina reverts back to total ineffectiveness. Also the division series is likely to have more off days than usual, so the Yankees may only use 3 starting pitchers.
That leaves Joe Torre, Brian Cashman, etc., to choose from Russ Ohlendorf (could definitely be the dark horse here), Jose Veras, Kyle Farnsworth (most likely will be added), Brian Bruney, Edwar Ramirez, Chris Britton, and Ron Villone (could be added simply beacuse he's left-handed).
So lets say Ohlendorf, Farnsworth, and Villone are added. That leaves 2 openings - the Yankees could take another position player (either Bronson Sardinha or Alberto Gonzalez) and leave the final spot for a coin flip between Veras, Ramirez, Britton, and Bruney. For now we'll say they go to Veras, whom they seem to have fallen in love with lately.
So the 25 would look something like this:
