Gardner Runs Out of Time

Unfortunately, you could see it coming- Brett Gardner is lost for the season.

The Yankees announced that Gardner will undergo season ending surgery to repair inflamed tissue in his balky right elbow. Gardner injured the arm when he made a diving sliding catch against the Twins back on April 18.

The soon-to-be 29-year old outfielder tried to rehab the injury several times, but felt continued pain each time.  The latest MRI showed the inflammation and the Yankees team of doctors decided it was time for Gardner to go under the knife.

No word if Gardner could possibly be back for the playoffs. Unless Brian Cashman makes a deal or someone like Chris Dickerson is recalled from the minors, Raul Ibanez, Jayson Nix, Dewayne Wise, and Andruw Jones will continue to split time in left field.

Soriano's Rapture

YES, my elbow hurts

I talked about my concerns at the possibility of signing Rafael Soriano this past off-season and unfortunately I might have hit the nail, or elbow, on the head.

The Yankees reported earlier today that Soriano was shut down while playing catch on flat ground Monday, and was sent for another MRI w/contrast (per YES' Kim Jones) today. After viewing it, the Yankees are sending Soriano to Dr. Doom, James Andrews. This does not bode well for the near or distant future. The Yankees did not reveal the results of the MRI, but speculation is that the inflammation is enough to go to the top guy for an opinion.

You may or may not remember that Soriano can opt out of his three year deal after both the first and second years. It's hard to imagine he would give up his contract if he's seriously injured, meaning worst case scenario the Yankees could be stuck paying someone who can't take the hill for an extended period of time (Carl Pavano anyone?).

Breaking News: Wainwright May Have Significant Injury | Baseball Digest

Breaking News: Wainwright May Have Significant Injury | Baseball Digest

The St. Louis Dispatch has reported that Cardinals ace right-hander Adam Wainwright has flown back to St. Louis to have his painful right elbow examined.

General Manager John Mozeliak believes that it is a “significant injury”, which could very well mean Tommy John surgery is in Wainwright’s future. “After his bullpen on Monday, he did feel something in his right elbow,” Mozeliak said. “I can say just based on the initial evaluation from our training staff, things do not look encouraging. But before we jump to any conclusions, we’ll just wait until the re-evaluation this afternoon.”

Wainwright has had problems with his right elbow before, including a tear to the same ligament back in 2004. Needless to say this would be a major blow to the Cardinals chances in the NL Central and wild card races. The right-hander won 39 games over the past two seasons and was runner up to Roy Halladay in the NL CY Young voting last season. He averaged over 231 innings the past two seasons and it has apparently taken a toll.

Breaking News: Nady to miss remainder of season

There was a time during spring training when rumors had Xavier Nady or Nick Swisher being dealt to another team. Good thing the move wasn't made, especially if had been Swisher that was moved.

Several sources are reporting that Xavier Nady will miss the remainder of the season due to a tear in his elbow that will require surgery. There's been no official announcement from the Yankees.
