Giants Stadium Will Not Be Missed

Don't get me wrong. A lot of great things have happened at Giants Stadium. There has been the road to three Giants' Super Bowl wins and four SB appearances. There was one near SB appearance for the Jets.

Countless Bruce Springsteen concerts. A great Billy Joel show back in '92, and countless other musical performances.

The Cosmos showed off Pele and Giorgio Chinaglia. On and on it goes. But like I said Giants Stadium will not be missed. It's a nothing facility. Not spectacular looking. No amazingly huge video screens. No out of the ordinary food areas or bathroom facilities. It's serviceable.

So while the memories of events will remain in tact, the place itself will not.

My favorite GS attended memories

12/23/86 - Giants defeat Broncos 19-16 in a Super Bowl preview. The Giants improved to 10-2 as the home crowd got revved up in anticipation of their first legitimate Super Bowl run. George Martin picked off a John Elway and returned it 78 yards for a touchdown. He was finally tackled by Lawrence Taylor in the end zone.

Billy Joel "Storm Front" Tour - July, 1992. Great show. Joel was young and full of energy. (I've only seen Springsteen in the arena)

12/10/00 - The Giants crush the Steelers 30-10 in a surprising run to the Super Bowl year. (Unfortunately, not all the games are good. I've also seen the Giants get crushed by the Deadskins and Ravens.)

The Daily Yankeeland - 8/22

We woke up this morning and it was still true: Carl Pavano is pitching tomorrow. The Yankees should just run Phil Hughes out there and stop treating him with kid gloves.
"I'm not asking him to make amends," Manager Joe Girardi said. "I'm just asking him to come and compete. I tell every player when they come here, it's a clean slate. I'm just expecting him to do his thing."
That was what Joe Girardi told Tyler Kepner about Pavano's comeback.

Joba Chamberlain is expected to throw 35 pitches in his Saturday bullpen session.

Phil Mushnick takes a dig at some of Michael Kay's hypocrisy.

The Steinbrenner boys are reportedly in negotiations with Bruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney for a farewell concert at Yankee Stadium. Can't be outdone by the Wilpons, ya know?

Hal Steinbrenner used Derek Jeter as a conduit last week. As several beat writers have pointed out, Hal- and not Hank- is the Steinbrenner son who is really running the show. Hank may be making the headlines, but he never goes to games, wasn't at Bobby Murcer's Memorial service, etc..

Mike Ashmore
reports on the Trenton Thunder's playoff-clinching win last night.

The Staten Island Yankees have won 8 straight.

What a difference a year makes. One year ago today, 8/22/07, the Orioles got lambasted by the Rangers, 30-3. The Yankees can't score 30 runs in a month.

Forgot to mention this the other day: Craig Biggio joined Mickey Mantle as the only MLB player to have number 7 retired.

Sad Day on 'E' Street

Longtime Bruce Springsteen 'E' Street band member Danny Federici died of cancer yesterday at age 58. He had battled melanoma for several years and had taken a leave of absence from the current tour, occasionally popping in to play with the band.

The Boss is deeply saddened..
"Danny and I worked together for 40 years - he was the most wonderfully fluid keyboard player and a pure natural musician. I loved him very much...we grew up together."
—Bruce Springsteen
Our condolences go out to Danny Federici's family and friends.

The Weekend Yankeeland

Not a lot of baseball news/rumors going on this weekend. The Giants played a putrid 2nd half this afternoon in losing to the Cowboys..at home. There's a clear talent and coaching difference between the 2 teams. Top that off with temps in the 20s, some snow flurries Saturday morning, and Spring Training just can't come fast enough.

The Yankees face a big deadline tomorrow. The end of the exclusive signing period for free agents. The Journal News' Mike Dougherty ran into Jorge Posada at the Knicks game earlier and asked what's going in the "process" (had to say it).

Posada felt confident a deal could be done with the Yankees and felt the chances were better than 50/50. He clearly wants to stay with the Yankees, but money/length of contract may overrule that (our words not his). Posada expects to hear from the Mets tomorrow. He also re-emphasized that his relationship with Joe Girardi is a good one. Source

As we're sure you heard by now, Joe Torre had some comments about A-Rod and Andy Pettitte at the Safe at Home Foundation fundraiser the other night. Torre feels that Pettitte will indeed hang it up. Hopefully he's wrong. What is funny though, is how many Yankees fans have expressed outrage at Torre's statement. So now he can't express his opinion? Torre also felt there was a possibility that A-Rod could join him in the Dodgers uni. Lee Mazzilli won't be joining Torre's coaching staff, however, choosing to stay closer to his ailing Mom, who is suffering from Alzheimer's.

A video of Bruce Springsteen, the real Boss, performing at the fundraiser, as well as pics of Bernie Williams jamming with him, can be seen here courtesy of Backstreets.com.

Also attending the gala was Donnie Baseball, with his twin son. No he doesn't have twins, but his son Preston, a member of the Dodgers organization, is a spitting image of the young Donnie B.

A member of the Twins organization told Newsday that Robinson Cano would be the target in any discussions involving Johann Santana. Even if the Yankees were given a window to negotiate a long term deal, we're totally against giving up a young star talent like Cano. Source

The NY Post is reporting that Carl Pavano may be released to make room on the 40 man roster. Source
