Reliever Damaso Marte had his option declined by the Yankees for 2009, but the Pinstripes brass never had any intention of letting Marte get away. The Yankees announced today they had signed Marte to a 3-year, $12 million deal that will keep him in the Bronx through 2011.
The 33-yr old was acquired along with Xavier Nady at last season's trade deadline for prospects Jose Tabata, Dan McCutchen, Russ Ohlendorf, and Jeff Karstens. Marte was inconsistent in his first half-season in the Bronx, but the Yankees are very high on his stuff and they also realize the need to keep more than one good left-hander in the pen. The Yankees will also be counting on rookie Phil Coke to fill that need.

Lincecum Grabs NL CY
San Francisco Giants second year pitcher Tim Lincecum is this year's winner of the National League CY Young Award. Lincecum finished the regular season with an 18-5 record to go along with a 2.62 ERA and a league best 265 strikeouts. The 24-yr old, who looks no more than 14, is just the second Giants pitcher to win the award. Mike McCormick was the other winner in 1967.
Lincecum beat out our choice for the award, Brandon Webb, by 64 votes and picked up 23 first place votes. In his first season in Flushing, two time AL winner Johan Santana finished third. Our pre-season pick, Jake Peavy, didn't receiving any votes. It's still a better pick than our AL choice of Erik Bedard.

Longoria and Soto Capture Rookie Honors
Evan Longoria, who helped the Rays to their first playoff appearance and catcher Geovanny Soto of the NL Central champion Cubs have been named the 2008 AL and NL Rookies of the Year.
Longoria was the guy that came with all the hype this year and our pre-season prediction. Alexei Ramirez was an unknown, a Cuban defector not expected to make an impact. Joba Chamberlain, Jacoby Ellsbury, and Clay Buchholz were all hyped up by the media based on the prior year's impact.
Of the rookies not named Longoria, Ramirez made the biggest splash, helping drive the White Sox to the AL West division crown. The 27-yr old finished at .277-21-90 and hit .333 from June 1st thru August 31st. Ramirez was clutch, hitting .398 with runners in scoring position and was versatile in the field, playing 121 games at second base, 16 games at shortstop, 11 games in center field, and 1 at third base.
Joba Chamberlain enjoyed a good season between the bullpen and starting rotation, though he didn't blow everyone away as a starter. Jacoby Ellsbury had a good season as well, stealing 50 bases, but he went through a prolonged slump before finishing at .280. Buchholz was a major disappointment. After throwing a no-hitter last September, Buchholz was hammered over 15 starts to the tune of a 6.75 ERA and some trips to the minor leagues where he finished the season.
But it was the superstar in the making, Longoria, who captured the baseball nation's attention. He hit .272-27-85 in 122 games and made the All-Star team in July. Longoria added 31 doubles, 2 triples, 7 stolen bases, and an .874 OPS. His glove work at third base was also solid.
The Cincinnati Reds' young stud outfielder Jay Bruce and the Cubs Japanese import, and our pre-season prediction, Kusoke Fukodome, both came with even more hype than Soto, and Bruce's Cincy teammates Johnny Cuerto and Homer Bailey were also highly thought of (as it turned out another Red, Joey Votto, had a better year than all of them).
But Soto's impressive rookie season was made even more impressive by the position he plays. In addition to taking his daily swings, he had to call and manage the team's pitchers, including the always volatile Carlos Zambrano. The Cubs starters had a good season and that reflected well on Soto's defensive game.
The 25-yr old hit .285-23-86 in over 500 plate appearances. He added 35 doubles, 2 triples, and an .872 OPS. (His numbers were remarkably similiar to Longoria's). Behind the plate Soto threw out 26.5% of all base stealers and put up a .995 defensive mark.

Breaking Rumor: Matt Holliday to the A's
Sources from SI and ESPN say that the A's and Rockies have reached a tentative agreement on a deal that would send Matt Holliday to the Oakland A's. The players rumored to possiby be going to Colorado include closer Huston Street, outfielder Carlos Gonzalez, and left-hander Greg Smith.
The biggest shock here of course is that the A's would go after a big name who is ready to make big money. Of course with Billy Beane this could be step one in an even larger deal.

NFL Picks - Week 10
It's been a busy week, works, elections, general chaos, but now we're back. Plenty of Yankees stuff to talk about, but for now we're just going to make our NFL picks. We were 8-6 last week thanks to success in the late games and MNF. That puts us at 71-55-4 for the season.
We're already off to an -01 start after getting the Browns (-3.5) vs. Broncos game wrong on Thursday night. Big Blue with another big game tonight against the Eagles. You already know how we feel about prime time games. Despite that we will stay take the Giants and the 3 points.
Giants +3 Prediction Giants 19 Eagles 17
Jets -9.5 vs. Rams
We probably would have taken the Rams had Stephen Jackson been able to play, but since he's not we feel the Jets will manhandle the Rams. Yeah we know, we saw how the Jets had their skirts on against the Chiefs and Raiders.
Jaguars -6.5 at Lions
The Jags have some making up to do after last week's embarrassing loss to the Bengals.
Titans -3 at Bears
No Kyle Orton, which means a return to the unreliable Rex Grossman for Da Bears. The Bears 'D' should keep the game close, but the Titans will remain unbeaten.
Patriots -3.5 vs. Bills
We are off the Bills bandwagon for now. This team has looked horrible the last couple of weeks. The Pats without Brady still find ways to win.
Falcons -1.5 vs. Saints
The Saints lack of defense is absurd and their offense is hit or miss. It's only made worse with injuries.
Dolphins -8 vs. Seahawks
The fish laying 8? This is the Miami Dolphins that won one game last year? Oh yeah, they've brought excitement back to the retirement state.
Packers +2.5 at Vikings
Big test for Aaron Rodgers and company. Same can be said for Minny.
Panthers -10 at Raiders
You know things are going bad when you're a 10 pt dog at home. The Raiders had 77 total yards last week. Take it away Joe Biden, "let me say that again, 77 yards".
Chargers -14.5 vs. Chiefs
The Chargers are extreme underachievers, but they will have no problem scoring 40 or more against this KC team.
Steelers -3.5 vs Colts
Ben Roethlisberger or no Ben Roethlisberger, the Steelers 'D' should be the difference maker. It helps that the Colts have no running game.
Ravens +2 at Texans
Baltimore would be favored if this were a home game. Schaub out, Rosenfels in at QB for Houston.
Cardinals -9.5 vs. 49ers
First Miami now this. The Cards by 9.5? Yeah, they're mediocre, but by far the best in their division.

The Weekend Yankeeland - 11/2
Welcome to the end of Daylight Savings Time. :( We're now in that dark, cold section of time until Spring Training. We imagine though that the Hot Stove league should be pretty hot in the metro area like it was last week.
Bobby Abreu filed for free agency this week and the NY Post reports that the Yankees will probably offer him arbitration. The Post also reports that the Yankees will not likely pick up Damaso Marte's $6 million option, opting for the quarter-million buyout instead. This doesn't mean the Yankees won't be interested in bringing Marte back.
Hank Steinbrenner confirmed that the Yankees will take a look at Manny Ramirez as an option for next year and beyond. It's unlikely though that the Yankees would be willing to give Manny the contract length (5 years?) and money ($100 million?) he is looking for.
The Yankees have add Wil De La Rosa and Eric Hacker to the 40-man roster.
Brett Gardner told MLB.com's Bryan Hoch that he's ready to compete for the starting center field job in '09.
Jack Curry says there are other big free agents besides CC Sabathia, Manny, and Mark Teixeira.

NFL Picks - Week 9
A very mediocre 6-7-1 last week puts us at 63-49-4 overall. Even without Tony Romo, today is a huge game for Big Blue as they host the Dallas Cowgirls Cowboys in one of those annoying home 4:15 games. Both the Giants and Jets play on the east coast, so unfortunately the Giants have the late, interrupt dinner, game. On the bright side, because both teams are on the road, you don't have to watch the Jets in the metro area. The Titans-Packers will be on FOX at 1 pm EST (did you set your clocks back?).
The Giants are 8.5 point favorites against the Cowboys due to Romo's injury and the poor play thus far of back up Brad Johnson. Tough spread against Dallas, but we think the Giants can handle it at home.
Giants -8.5 vs. Cowboys Prediction: Giants 27 Cowboys 17
Bills -5 vs. Jets
The Bills are coming off a bad loss to the Dolphins last week, while the Jets face the toughest stretch of their schedule. Brett Favre will move the ball against the Bills, but after the Jets poor performances against the Raiders and Chiefs, we can't possibly take them.
Texans +5.5 at Vikings
A couple of 3-4 teams, with the Texans having won their last three games. The Vikings have the second best defense against the run, but have to stop Andre Johnson in the passing game. Vikings should take the home game, but it should be close.
Jaguars -7.5 at Bengals
The Jags offense should be able to cause havoc all over Paul Brown Stadium. The winless Bengals will remain that way.
Bucaneers -9.5 at Chiefs
We really don't like when the Bucs have large spreads, but this one-win Chiefs team is that bad. And they're only worse without the president of the He-man Woman Hater's Club, Larry Johnson.
Ravens +2 at Browns
This is a tough one between the old Browns and the new Browns. We see a low scoring game that can go either way. Eeny-meeny-miny-Ravens.
Cardinas -3 vs. Rams
The old St. Louis vs. the new St. Louis. Cardinals are 3-0 at home and they should remain unbeaten in that regard. Stephen Jackson is a game time decision once again.
Bears -12.5 vs. Lions
Really don't like this line, but like the Lions even less. Actually we don't like the Lions at all. Bears in a blow out.
Titans -4 vs. Packers
Titans should remain unbeaten, but this should be a pretty close ball game. Aaron Rodgers just got himself a contract extension. Let's see how he reacts. Titans by 6.
Broncos -3.5 vs. Dolphins
The Dolphins have done a great job and are highly competitive. The Broncos are playing old style AFL high scoring games. They should allow plenty of points in this one too, but should win it by a touchdown.
Falcons -3 at Raiders
Matt Ryan will enjoy a big game. There's nothing more that needs to be said. Raiduhs stink.
Eagles -6.5 vs. Seahawks
We're not allowing Seattle's romp over a bad 49ers team to influence us. Look for a big day from Brian Westbrook.
Patriots +6.5 at Colts
This is not the rivalry it once was. We think the Pats will win outright, but even if we're wrong this should be a field goal game.
Steelers +2 vs. Redskins
Great MNF match up. The Steelers are banged up and coming off a tough loss to the Giants. The Redskins struggled against the Lions and Browns the last two weeks, but won both. Not this time.
