The only attempt to make it a ball game came in the 6th with the Yankees up 4-1. Jerry Owens singled and stole second base. Tadahito Iguchi followed with a single to center, but Melky Cabrera threw a laser to home plate to easily nail Owens.
The Yankees broke open a scoreless game with a 4-run 2nd inning. Miguel Cairo got the first of his two singles and two stolen bases and came home on a Johnny Damon double. A Derek Jeter single and walk to Bobby Abreu loaded the bases for Alex Rodriguez. A-Rod drilled a Javier Vazquez pitch off the base of the left field wall for a 2-run single. A-Rod had broken into his home run trot before he realized the ball was in play. He was thrown out at 2nd, though replays clearly showed he was safe. (Perhaps his lack of hustle to start the play was why Joe Torre didn't come out to argue?)
Hideki Matsui's sac fly brought home the final run of the inning. Abreu added a solo HR, his 3rd, in the 8th for the game's final score.
