Yankes Polish Off A's Again

Here's my recap from game I covered for BaseballDigest.com.

A.J. Burnett may not have been pitching for his rotation spot, as Joe Girardi stated during his pre-game press conference, but a winless August had to have the tall right-hander concerned. Wednesday night he gave his manager six solid innings as the Yankees won their fifth straight, 4-3 over the Oakland A’s.

People talk about the great A.J., the good A.J., and the bad A.J.; tonight each made an appearance. But unlike that winless August, Burnett hung tough, finishing strong in his final inning and, in the process, gave the Yankees some length from their starter. Had it not been for a rested bullpen, Girardi said he most likely would have sent Burnett out for the 7th inning. Burnett said afterwards he can’t worry about “What the manager is saying/doing concerning the rotation. I just need to go out and do my job.”

Yankees Make Rotation Change

Had the pleasure of working tonight's Yankees-A's game for BaseballDigest.com.

Joe Girardi said he is happy with his starting rotation, but with a slight adjustment. Girardi opened his pre-game press conference today by announcing that Javier Vazquez will be replacing Dustin Moseley in the rotation beginning this Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Girardi feels the rest Vazquez has had working out of the pen, coupled with an adjustment in mechanics, has gotten Vazquez back on track. Girardi feels the right-hander’s fastball has been “truer”, which has resulted in good location and success. Pitching coach Dave Eiland later added that he made an adjustment in Vazquez’s leg kick and moved him to the middle of the rubber to ensure he “gets behind the baseball.”

Yankees Send Mazzaro Back to Jersey

New Jersey native Vin Mazzaro had plenty of family and friends in attendance for tonight's Yankees-A's contest, but the Bergen County native wouldn't make it out of the 4th inning. The Yankees belted three home runs to help Phil Hughes earn his 16th win in a 9-3 victory. The win also put the Yankees in sole possession of first place for the first time in over a week. The Yankes got help from the Toronto Blue Jays, who belted the Tampa Bay Rays 13-5.

Hughes struggled with his control and neared 100 pitches when he completed his 5th and final inning. But the right-hander got plenty of run support early. Already up 1-0 in the 1st, the Yankees added a second run when Mark Ellis booted Nick Swisher's potential inning ending ground out. The error allowed Derek Jeter to come home for a 2-0 lead. The A's continued their Bad News Bears impersonation when left fielder Jeff Larish got to close to the wall on Jorge Posada's RBI drive. Posada should have been a dead duck at third as he tried to stretch his double into a triple, but Kevin Kouzmanoff couldn't handle throw that clearly had the Yankees' catcher beat. It was Posada's first triple of the season.

Up 3-1 in the 3rd, Nick Swisher got the green light on a 3-0 fastball and drilled it into the seats for a 5-1 Yankees advantage. An inning later Curtis Granderson went yard to give the Bombers a 6-2 edge before Mark Teixeira busted the game open with a 3-run blast. It was the 30th home run of the year for the first baseman, the seventh straight year he's accomplished the feat.

Chad Gaudin (3 IP) and David Robertson finished up for Hughes, who told the YES Network's Kim Jones that he was embarrassed by his performance. Knowing he was done after five innings, he thanked each of his teammates as they came off the field at the end of the inning.

Notes

Lance Berkman played another rehab game at Trenton and said he's ready to rejoin the big ball club. Alex Rodriguez is expected back on Sunday.

Andy Pettitte felt sore, but good one day after another throwing session. He's expected to give it another go on Wednesday.

A.J. Burnett fights for his spot in the rotation Wednesday night against left-hander Brett Anderson.

Yankees Crush A's, But Javy's The Story

With Dustin Moseley still trying to make a name for himself, Andy Pettitte still on the DL, and A.J. Burnett still pitching crazy after all these years, Javier Vazquez knows he has an opportunity to step up. He did just that last night, throwing 4.2 innings of relief in the Yankees 11-5 laugher over the Oakland A's. A minor adjustment made by pitching coach Dave Eiland seemed to make the difference for Vazquez, who was unusually animated during last night's game.
All it took was Vazquez moving his leg kick backward and in, which, in turn, allows him to have more momentum going forward. And, as a result, according to the right-hander, his ball doesn’t tail inside as much, because he’s throwing more over the top instead of dropping his arm slot. (Source: NJ.com)
The game didn't start off well as Moseley struggled, allowing three runners to cross home plate in the 1st inning. The Yankees immdiately answered back and took a 5-3 lead. But when Moseley gave up another run in the 4th and put runners on base in the 5th, Joe Girardi had seen enough. Vazquez was making his third relief appearance of the season and earned the win (his second in relief) after allowing just a single run the rest of the way. His fastball was clocked at a consistent 90 mph and was offset by low-to-mid 70's off speed stuff that kept hitters off balance all night. And Vazquez's own hitters game him more than ample support.

Mark Teixeira was back in the lineup after missing most of the weekend series with the Chicago White Sox with a bruised thumb. Tex hit back to back home runs with Robinson Cano and added a double, single, and three runs scored. Nick Swisher enjoyed a 3-hit, 3-RBI night, and Marcus Thames continued his torrid streak with a 3-run bash of his own. In his last five starts, Thames has six home runs and 11 RBI.

Oakland starter Trevor Cahill entred the game with a 2.43 ERA, but saw it rise nearly 40 points after he allowed eight earned runs in four innings.

Now Vazquez must sit and wait. He could replace Moseley, who has allowed 14 earned runs in his last 19.2 innings or A.J. Burnett if were to have another rocky outing on Wednesday. For now, the Yankees are glad they have an experienced starter to pick up some long relief innings.

Notes

Lance Berkman began the first of two game Trenton rehab stint and went 2-5. He could be activated in time for Wednesday night's Yankees game.

A-Rod Avoids The Mound, Steps on Home Plate

Alex Rodriguez left his mark in Oakland's Alameda Coliseum last night and it wasn't because he stepped on someone's mound. A-Rod crept closer to 600 career home runs with a pair of blasts in the Yankees 6-1 win over the A's. CC Sabathia tossed 7+ innings for his 11th win, but this game was all about his third baseman.

A-Rod received a joke gift basket from former nemesis Dallas Braden, but it was A-Rod who had the biggest gift for his teammates. With the bases loaded in the 3rd, Rodriguez crushed a Trevor Cahill pitch for his 21st career grand slam. He later added a solo home run to give him 597 blasts in his career.

Unfortunately, there hasn't been a lot of ballyhoo about the milestone, and that has to be linked directly to A-Rod's admission of steroid use last year. It remains to be seen how both the Yankees and MLB will handle the feat.

Sabathia handled the A's just fine. Though he didn't have his best command, he allowed just one run and struck out 10, and is now 30-11 as a Yankee.

Notes

Jorge Posada had the catcher's gear back on last night after missing one game with a sprained ring finger.

Robinson Cano entered the HR Derby at next week's All-Star game much to the chagrin of his manager and hitting coach. But Joe Girardi and Kevin Long have to be pleased today after Cano backed out of the contest with a minor back issue. I'm sure it's very minor.

A-Rod has driven in 16 runs in his last 10 games.

Vazquez Gets West Coast Trip Off On Right Foot

Javier Vazquez remembers back in April when the boos outweighed his fastball. But since then Vazquez has pitched at an All-Star level. The new and improved Vazquez continued last night when he pitching seven strong innings to earn his 7th win in the Yankees 3-1 victory over the Oakland A's.

Vazquez pitched to a 9.00 ERA in the first month of the season and was booed lustily by Yankees fans who still erroneously blamed him for the game 7 loss in the 2004 ALCS. But despite being skipped over in the rotation once, Vazquez hung tough and has recorded a 6-4, 3.57 mark since May 1. He's been even better since June 1, putting up a 2.93 ERA and has held opponents to under a .200 average.

The Yankees needed a good start from Vazquez since the team's offense couldn't muster much against A's starter Ben Sheets. The Yankees got on the board in the 2nd inning with a trio of clutch two out base hits.

Nick Swisher doubled into the right field corner and came around to score on Curtis Granderson's triple. Francisco Cervelli then served one back up the middle for an RBI single and a 2-0 Yankees lead.

Oakland got a run back in the 4th on a one out triple by Cliff Pennington and a sacrifice fly by Coco Crisp. But Mark Teixeira smacked his 14th home run of the season in the 6th to re-establish the two run lead.

That's all Vazquez, Joba Chamberlain, and Mariano Rivera, who earned his 19th save, would need to take the first game of the three game set.

Notes

With Brett Gardner red hot at the bottom of the lineup, Joe Girardi decided to shake things up a bit and put him in the lead off spot. Derek Jeter moved back to his old number two spot in the order. Gardner was 0-4, but is expected to get a shot at using his speed at the top of the lineup.

Curtis Granderson and Colin Curtis made back to back diving catches in the 7th inning to take away a pair of Oakland hits.

Jorge Posada will still need another day or two, according to Girardi, before being able to return to the lineup after a foul tip left him a sprained left ring finger on Sunday.

Yankees Turn Rare Feat But Lose

photo courtesy of Yahoo Sports

Tough day for CC Sabathia and the Yankees. The big man walked a career high six batters in tossing an eight inning complete game. Lost in the loss was the first triple play the Yankees have turned in 42 years. In case you missed here is the video and more about it.

The previous play came on my Mommy's birthday, June 3, 1968. That star of stars, Dooley Womack (heavy sarcasm), Bobby Cox (yes, one and the same) and Mickey Mantle, who was playing 1st base by then, combined on the triple killing.

Yankees only offense today against A's starter Dallas Braden were solo home runs by Mark Teixeira and Marcus Thames. It was the latter's first of the year. Braden made a bigger impression though when he decided to take on Alex Rodriguez.

Rodriguez ran across the pitcher's mound after fouling out to first base. Braden was not amused and starting yelling at the Yankees third baseman. That led to a further exchange of nonsense. Check out the details as reported by Marc Carig on NJ.com.

Despite the loss, the Yankees have won all five series they've played this year and stand at 11-4. The team now heads to Anaheim for a three game series with the Anaheim Angels, including a national broadcast game Saturday on Fox. The team winds up the road trip with three games in Baltimore beginning on Tuesday.

CLICK

That's the sound that followed the sound of a pitch thrown by Andy Pettitte making contact with the bat of Jack Cust. The result was a 3-run HR and a shut off television. Why get aggravated for 7 more innings.

The Yankees managed to score 5 runs this afternoon, but Pettitte (4-6) got rocked for 8 runs (7 earned) in just 1 2-3 innings and the A's took 2 of 3 in the series with an 11-5 win. Danny Haren (10-2) entered the game with a 1.91 ERA, but the Yankees roughed him up for 5 runs in 5 1-3 innings. It jumped Haren's ERA up 2.20.

Ron Villone threw 3 1-3 scoreless innings out of the pen, saving the bullpen and giving the Yankees the chance to chip away. Derek Jeter's 5th inning single cut the margin to 8-5, but the A's pushed 3 more across against Brian Bruney, Mike "I can't get anyone out" Myers, and Luis Vizcaino.

Already leading 1-0 entering the 2nd, the A's made it a short day for Pettitte. Bobby Crosby, Jason Kendall, Mark Kotsay, and Kurt Suzuki strung together 4 straight singles for a 2-0 lead. A Mark Ellis sac fly pushed across a 3rd run before Cust broke it open with his 14th home run of the season.

Joe Torre was hoping Pettitte could still give him some innings, but after an Eric Chavez double and 2-run HR by Dan Johnson (9th), Torre had no choice but to go to the pen.

After Haren exited, the trio of rookies Dallas Braden and Santiago Casilla, and veteran Alan Embree shut down the Yankees over the final 3 2-3 innings.

~~~
As a move to bolster his confidence, and yet continue to overwork him, Torre used Scott Proctor for an inning and a third. Thankfully, nothing was burned after the game.
One Hit Wonder
We barely had time to enjoy Friday night's win against the A's, before the Yankees went out and embarrassed themselves, yet again, on Saturday. The Yankeed had 1, count 'em, 1 hit this afternoon. Chad Gaudin, who was cut loosely in a premature move by the Blue Jays, has started to emerge as a starter for Oakland this season. He had struggled in his last 3 starts, but took a no-hitter into the 6th inning today at Yankee Stadium.
Johnny Damon finally singled up the middle to snap the hitless streak, but Gaudin and Rich Harden combined on a 1-hit shutout as the A's won 7-0. It's the 5th time this season the Yankees have been blanked, already one more than all of last season.
Kei Igawa was up and down in his start for the Yankees. He retired the first 8 hitters he faced, then gave up back to back HRs to Jason Kendall (2nd) and Shannon Stewart (7th) in the 3rd. Meanwhile the Yankees could only manage two base runners - walks to Hideki Matsui in the 2nd and Melky Cabrera in the 5th - against Gaudin.
Igawa settled back down after getting out of the 3rd and kept the Yankees in the game until the 6th. That's when he issued a 2-out walk to Eric Chavez. Igawa nearly struck out Dan Johnson looking to end the inning, but home plate ump Angel Hernandez disagreed. Igawa then left a hanger up in the zone and Johnson (8th) pounded it into the upper deck in right for a 4-0 A's lead.
The A's picked up 3 more runs in the 7th against Scott Proctor and Mike Myers (2 batters faced - 1 walk, 1 hit- I hate this man) and the game was all but done. Gaudin went 7 before Harden, who due to arm troubles is pitching out of the pen, allowed 2 walks in a pair of scoreless innings.
~~~

In Friday night's 2-1 victory, Alex Rodriguez picked up his 34th RBI of June. It's tops in the majors and ties the amount he had in April. Imagine if he had a decent May!

Kyle Farnsworth's tantrum when he was pulled in the 8th inning of Friday's game - in case you missed he was shaking his head and muttering on his way to the dugout, then slammed his mitt from the top step - is just more reason this jerk has to go. How he even had the balls to complain is beyond me. He's been nothing short of awful in his 1+ years here and is considered a jerk by most who deal with him. And take Myers with you.

Oakland Brings Their A's Game

Yankees return to the Bronx tonight to kick off a 10 game homestead against the A's. The pre-All Star break stretch ends July 8 vs. the Angels. The Yankees lost 2 of 3 to Oakland back in May. All three games were decided by one run.

Pitching Probables

Friday - Joe Kennedy (2-5, 3.98) vs Mike Mussina (3-5, 4.98) - try not to scream every time Michael Kay refers to Kennedy as "the patriarch". I need nearly put my foot through the TV when he said it during a promo on Thursday.

Saturday - C. Gaudin (6-3) vs. K. Igawa (2-1, 7.13) - Hopefully Igawa doesn't pitch like himself.

Sunday - Danny Haren (9-2, 1.91) vs. Andy Pettitte (4-5, 3.24) - 1.91, in this day and age?!

Paging George Carlin

Those 7 words you can't say on television? I'd like to add the seventy-some odd ones I said as the Yankees game ended. I could have called this "Why I Hate West Coast Games, Part III", but decided against it.

What could have been a feel good 4-2 road trip through Minnesota and Oakland, turned into a fair 3-3 crap fest. The Yankees lost 3 of the last 4 on the trip and really blew the two in Oakland.

First inning of this one looked like the rest of games lately. Derek Jeter, who is going to take Roberto Duran's nickname, Manos De Piedra (hands of stone), if he keeps playing shortstop like is, made yet another error. Which lead to 2 runs off of Andy Pettitte, who hadn't allowed a first inning run in a Zimmer's age.

But the Yankees battled back as they did Saturday night, and took a 4-2 lead into the 9th. Mariano Rivera came on to pick up the save. 2 outs, none on, and Todd Walker up. Base hit to left. No problem. Jason Kendall walks on a 3-2. Okay two men on, but light hitting Marco Scutaro, hereto referred to as "The Little Shit" was coming up. Not Nick Swisher, not Eric Chavez, just The Little Shit. Mo got ahead 1-2 and then...and then...this is really difficult to put in writing without getting angry again...The Little Shit hit a walk off 3-run HR. At least it
wasn't in extra innings.

Andy Pettitte gave the Yankees just what the Dr. ordered again with 7 solid innings and Scott Proctor threw a 1-2-3 8th inning.

~~~
With 3/5 of the starting rotation now on the DL, the Yankees are calling up lefty Chase Wright to start Tuesday's game vs. Cleveland. Wright has been phenomenal in his 2 starts in Trenton this year, and the Yankees can only hope some of that magic continues.
Speaking of the Thunder, they pulled off quite a feat on Saturday. Not only did they sweep a doubleheader, but they pitched back to back shutouts. Oh and by the way, the 2nd game went 15 innings. That extended the Thunder's pitching scoreless streak to 46 innings!
