Matt Garza No-Hits Tigers

Matt Garza of the Tampa Bay Rays has just completed a 9-inning no-hitter against the Detroit Tigers. It's the first no-no in Rays' history.

Garza retired Don Kelly on a ground out to start the 9th, then struck out Gerald Laird looking for the 2nd out. Pinch-hitter Ramon Santiago hit a soft liner to Ben Zobrist in right field for the final out.

The two teams were actually locked into a double no-hitter entering the 6th with Max Scherzer blanking the Rays. But after loading the bases on a pair of walks and an error, the Rays ended Scherzer's bid and broke the game open on Matt Joyce's grand slam. Joyce had grown up in the Tigers' system before being dealt for Edwin Jackson prior to the 2009 season.

Garza threw 120 pitches, 80 for strikes, and allowed just a walk to Brennan Boesch in the 2nd inning. He also struck out six.

The Rays had already been no-hit twice this season, by Jackson, who is now with the Diamondbacks and by Oakland's Dallas Braden. In getting the no-no the Rays become the first team since the 1991 Chicago White Sox to both throw a no-hitter (Wilson Alvarez vs. Balt.) and be no-hit (KC's Bret Saberhagen).

The new 3rd Baseman drove in 5 runs, while is switcheroo counterpart Miguel Cabrera cracked a 3-run homer. The Rangers have allowed 59 runs during their current 6-game losing streak.

The Angels got over their Fenway hex to snap the Red Sox 6-game winning streak, 6-4. Gary Matthews Jr. slugged a pair of solo home runs and Casey Kotchman added his 6th of the year. Dice-K was the lastest Red Sox hit by the flu and was scratched from his start in favor of Jon Lester. Big Papi continued to break out of his slump (9 for his last 22) with his 3rd home run, raising his average to .188.

The Rays dropped the Blue Jays into the AL East basement with a 5-3 win. Jason Hammel outpitched Roy Halliday who threw his 3rd straight complete game. When Halladay breaks down, will John Gibbons finally get the message not to overuse his ace?

Mike Sweeney homered and drove in 2 runs, and Chad Gaudin threw 7 scoreless innings in the A's 3-0 shutout of the Twins. It was Sweeney's first home run not in a Kansas City uniform.

The Orioles rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat the Mariners 3-2. Nick Markakis' ground out tied the game in the 6th and his home run in the 8th was the game winner. Daniel Cabrera was on his game, allowing 5 hits and no walks in 8 innings.

The Indians and Royals were rained out and will be playing a twinbill today.

The Atlanta Braves had a 5-game winning streak. Then they hosted the Florida Marlins. The NL East leaders dropped the Braves for the second straight game, 7-2. Mike Jacobs and Hanley Ramirez each hit their 7th home runs of the season, and Adam Miller won his first game as a Marlin.

The Cubs and Rockies played a see-saw match in Colorado. The Cubs blew a 3-0 lead, rallied from a 5-4 deficit, blew a 6-5 lead, and then finally won in 10 on Ryan Theriot's 2nd hit of the game. The Cubs offense is out of control. The Rangers should be glad they aren't playing them. Just take a look at the averages of the starting eight.

Bengie Molina homered off Trevor Hoffman to tie the game in the 9th and the Giants went on to beat the Padres 3-2 in13 innings. Fred Lewis and Aaron Rowand each singled in a run in the winning inning (nice rhyme).

UPDATE 4/24 2:07 PM EDT - Frank Thomas has indeed returned to the A's. No word on who the mystery team was that supposedly came into play. Does this mean Mike Sweeney's days in Oakland are numbered?

The Red Sox rallied from a 4-1 deficit to beat the Indians 6-4 last night. Manny Ramirez capped the comeback with a game winning 2-run HR in the 9th off of Joe Borowski. It was career HR number 493 for Man-child. Many people, us included, picked the Indians to win the AL Central based on the strength of their bullpen. The ERAs of their top 3 in the pen? Borowski (18.00 - actually not a shock), Rafael Betancourt (5.14), and Rafael Perez (8.41). Borowski also said after the game that his arm felt tired. He hit only 83 mph on the radar gun.

The Tigers got the offensive explosion they've been waiting for all year, in an 11-9 win over the Twins. Detroit scores 6 runs in the 8th to rally from a 9-4 deficit. Carlos Guillen and Ivan Rodriguez drove in 3 runs each.

Miguel Olivo had 3 hits, including a home run, in the Royals 5-1 win over the Mariners. Zach Grienke tossed a complete game 4-hitter to improve to 3-0 with a 0.75 ERA.

Kevin Millar homered and drove in 3 in the Orioles 4-3 win over the Blue Jays. The win kept the O's in 1st place in the AL East.

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinal is reporting that the Brewers have signed free agent pitch Jeff Weaver to a 1-year, incentive laden deal.

Mets GM Omar Minaya said Pedro Martinez will be out until at least the middle of May and possibly the beginning of June. Not good news for our projected comeback player of the year.

Angels 2nd Baseman Howie Kendrick is out until at least the weekend with a strained hamstring. He may yet end up on the DL.
