Breaking News: Lou Piniella Retiring Today

Lou Piniella had already announced he would be retiring after this season, but he's cut the season even shorter to be with his ailing 90-yr old mother.

My best wishes go out to Lou and his family in this tough time.

Not everyone likes or loves Sweet Lou (my Mrs. included), but he will always have a special place in my heart for his time as a Yankees player. One of a kind.

George Steinbrenner Has Died

Yankees principle owner George Steinbrenner has died according to an official NY Yankees press release.

Steinbrenner, who turned 80 on July 4, was at his home in the Tampa/St. Pete area when emergency responders were called Monday night. He died at 6:30 a.m. this morning of an apparent heart attack.

The Yankees released the following statement:

“It is with profound sadness that the family of George M. Steinbrenner III announces his passing,” the family said in a statement released this morning. “He passed away this morning in Tampa, Fla., at age 80. He was an incredible and charitable man. First and foremost he was devoted to his entire family – his beloved wife, Joan; his sisters, Susan Norpell and Judy Kamm, his children, Hank, Jennifer Jessica and Hal; and all of his grandchildren. He was a visionary and a giant in the world of sports. He took a great but struggling franchise and turned it into a champion again.”

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Steinbrenner and Yankees families.

Stunning news out of Los Angeles this morning. 22-yr old Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart was killed shortly after Midnight earlier today in a felony hit and run accident.

Adenhart, who had thrown six shutout innings in his star against the Oakland A's Wednesday night, was traveling with three other passengers in Fullerton, CA. A red minivan ran a red light and smashed into the silver van that Adenhart was a passenger in. In addition to Adenhart, another passenger was killed at the scene, while a third victim was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Anyone with information on the accident should contact the local authorities.

We send our condolences to the friends and family of Nick Adenhart. This is a true tragedy.

UPDATE - 1:05 pm EDT

It appears now that two of the other victims killed were in a third car, not in the same car as Adenhart.

Adenhart's family released the following statement:

"Nick's family expresses sincere gratitude for all the help the Angels have provided. He lived his dream and was blessed to be part of an organization comprised of such warm, caring, and compassionate people. The Angels were his extended family. Thanks to all of Nick's loyal supporters and fans throughout his career. He will always be in everyone's hearts forever."

Breaking News: Gary Sheffield released by Tigers

Former Yankee, and always controversial figure, Gary Sheffield is now a former Detroit Tiger too. The 39-yr old is just one home run shy of joining the 500 home run club, but has become injury prone the last few years. Last season he hit just .225 in 114 games.

Some team will probably give him a shot, though he is likely to clear waivers, meaning he won't be on an opening day roster.

Two anabolic steroids showed up in A-Rod screening. When asked about it on Thursday, A-Rod said, "You'll have to talk to the union. I'm not saying anything."

Read the complete story here.

Breaking News: Cards Can't Glaus Over Need for Help at Hot Corner

The St.Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that Cardinals' third baseman Troy Glaus will be out 3 months after having shoulder surgery. As it stands right now, Glaus would miss the first month of the regular season.

There was no mention of the problem during the team's fan fest last weekend, and the Cardinals gave no reason as to why Glaus waited so long to have the surgery. Glaus' shoulder was basically cleaned up by renowned orthopedist, Dr. Lewis Yocum.

Mets Get Putz in Blockbuster Deal

Occasionally trade rumors do come to fruition and late Wednesday night was one of those times. The Mets acquired Mariners closer J.J. Putz in a huge 3 team, 12 player deal. In addition to the Mets and Mariners, the Indians jumped into the fray, getting reliever Joe Smith from the Mets and Luis Valbuena from the Mariners.

In addition to Putz, who will now set up for Francisco Rodriguez, the Mets also picked up M's center fielder Jeremy Reed and right-hander Sean Green. Reed will serve as a reserve outfielder, while Green will pitch out of the pen and can be used for spot starts.

The Mariners received outfielder Franklin Gutierrez, who will most likely be their new center fielder, from the Indians, and Aaron Heilman, Endy Chavez, Mike Carp, Maikel Cleto, Ezequiel Carrera, and Jason Vargas from the Mets.

Heilman wore out his welcome in New York with his performances the last 2 seasons as well as constant whining about wanting to start. He'll probably finally get the chance in Seattle, with Brandon Morrow now the heir-apparent for the closer's role.

Breaking News: Mussina Calls it a Career

It's official, Mike Mussina has come to a decision and that decision is to hang up his cleats after an illustrious 18-year career. That according to ESPN. Mussina had a revival this past season, winning 20 games for the first time in his career and finished with 270 wins, good for 33rd on the all-time list. He struck out 2,813 batters (19th) in over 3,500 innings pitched.

Mussina made a name for himself in Baltimore where he pitched for the first 10 years of his career before leaving as a free agent after the 2000 season. He spent the last 8 seasons in Pinstripes, signing a second contract after his initial 6-year deal. Mussina won at least 10 games for 17 straight seasons, including the strike shortened 1994 season.

He twice fell short of winning 20 games before beating the Red Sox this past September 28 to finally get the monkey off his back. The soon to be 40-yr old also saw playoff action in 9 seasons. He was the pitcher when Derek Jeter made "The Play" in 2001 and recorded 15 strikeout games as a member of the Orioles in 1997.

Thanks for the memories Moose and good luck!

Breaking News: Yankees Acquire Nick Swisher from White Sox

ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick is reporting that the Yankees have acquired outfielder/1st baseman Nich Swisher from the Chicago White Sox for minor league pitcher Jeff Marquez. Fox's Ken Rosenthal also reported the Yankees received Class AA right-hander Kanekoa Texeira. Not quite the Teixeira we were all hoping for.

Swisher gives the Yankees the option of playing him regularly in centerfield or at first base.

Update: 4:35 PM - The Yankees have also included Wilson Betemit as part of the deal. To which we say, "YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS"
