Happy New Year

Happy New Year everyone. The blog turned 2 years old on December 12 and has been getting bigger and better since. We dedicated ourselves a lot more to it this year than in 2006 and we plan to make it even better in 2008.

Here's a little video from Dan Fogelberg. I wouldn't consider myself a fan, but he was a very underrated singer/songwriter. He died of prostate cancer a couple of weeks ago. This was his most commercially heard song and appropriate for New Year's Eve.

So party hardy, but don't drink and drive, and be safe.

This Week in the NFL - Week 17

We've made it...the final week of the regular NFL season. A couple of playoff spots left to be decided and some history that can be made. Other than that it's nearly impossible to tell what will happen in this week's games. Players are rested, injured ones are shut down, and some have just quit on the season. That being said, here's our picks for Week 17.

Patriots -13.5 at Giants
You're kidding right? The Pats are going to blow the Giants off the field to get their perfect regular season. The Giants could play all their starters for the full 60 minutes and it wouldn't matter. We actually had a chance to go to this game and passed.

Jets -6 vs. Chiefs
Back to back games at the Meadowlands. Too bad they didn't play a doubleheader.

Eagles -7.5 vs. Bills
This is really too big a spread for the Cheesesteaks, but McNabb is hot again and the Bills can't stop the run - translation: big game for Brian Westbrook.

Bucs +2.5 vs. Panthers
Bucs will be sitting regulars, but their defense should still be enough to stop whomever is at QB for the Panthers.

Bengals -2.5 at Dolphins
We wouldn't be at all surprised for the Bungles to show up, but Carson Palmer should be able to pick apart the Fish defense.

Packers -5 at Lions
Packers were humiliated by the Bears last week. Favre won't play the whole game, but its still bad news for the Lions.

Jags +6 at Texans
Sorry, even with the regulars sitting, this team is too good for the Texans.

Seahawks +1 at Falcons
We predict we'll get this one wrong.

Browns -11.5 at 49ers
They may not make the playoffs, but the Browns are going to go out with a bang.

Bears +2 vs. Saints
Our mistrust of the Saints continues.

Cowboys +9 at Redskins
We thinks the Skins will win the game, but even with the 'boys 2nd stringers in it should be close.

Steelers -3 at Ravens
Ravens stink. 'nuff said.

Vikings -3 at Broncos
Vikings blew their playoff chances last week, but slim chances are better than none.

Chargers +8 at Raiders
Meaningless game, but the Bolts want to go to the playoffs on a high note.

Rams +6 at Cardinals
We waivered on this one. No trust in either team.

Colts +5 vs. Titans
Peyton will play long enough to take this one.

The Face of the Victim

Too often the victim is forgotten in criminal cases. Jim Leyritz is not likely to forget the face of Fredia Veitch any time soon. Veitch was the victim yesterday early morning when Leyritz allegedly drove while under the influence and crashed his SUV into Veitch's car.

Fredia Veitch was a waitress at a Ft. Lauderdale area steakhouse, working her last week on the late shift. Her husband was uncomfortable with her late hours due to the propensity of drunk drivers on the road when she would be returning home from work.

Her two children are now without a mother because of an irresponsible act. It's a reminder of the dangers of drunk driving. If you don't care enough about yourself, think about the pain you could be inflicting on someone else's family. Think about what it would be like if it was your family that was affected. And then call a cab.

In This Corner

The "he said, he said" battle between Brian McNamee and Roger Clemens is starting to heat up. Clemens has already stepped up with a video defense and an upcoming interview with 60 Minutes. Now McNamee's lawyers have brought in attorney Richard D. Emery to help defend the personal trainer against accusations of lying to the Mitchell investigation.

McNamee's attorney, Earl Ward, asked Emery to come on board because of his experience with libel and defamation cases, and in case the situation were to arise where McNamee would want to sue Clemens.
“If Roger Clemens continues to play fast and loose with the truth on ‘60 Minutes’ and he continues to call Brian McNamee a liar then we will proceed with a defamation suit,” Emery said in a telephone interview. “It is one of the only avenues Brian has to defend himself against the claims that he lied.”

Breaking News: Leyritz Arrested for DUI, Vehicular Homicide

Former Yankee Jim Leyritz has never been afraid to speak his mind, but it will be interesting what he has to say after his arrest earlier today on charges of DUI and Vehicular Homicide. Leyritz is being held on $11,000 bond after his SUV collided with another vehicle at an intersection in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. The vehicle rolled over and the female driver was ejected. She later died at an area hospital. Leyritz was booked on suspicion of DUI after he refused to take a Breathalyzer test.

Leyritz has been making a name for himself as a baseball analyst for mlb.com and has announced minor league games for the YES network.

Source

UPDATE: 3:05 EST: A conviction of vehicular homicide while under the influence of alcohol is a second degree felony in Florida. Leyritz would face a fine of up to $10,000 and up to 15 years in prison. He also would lose his driver's license permanently, though he could apply for reinstatement after five years. Leyritz was apparently out celebrating his 44th birthday on Thursday.

UPDATE: 6:00 EST: Some more details of the crash have surfaced. Leyritz was driving a Ford Expedition when he ran a red light, smashing into the Mitsubishi Montero, driven by Fredia Ann Veitch. The 3o-year old victim leaves behind 2 children.
"Officers on scene observed Leyritz to have red, watery eyes, a flushed face and an odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his person," Fort Lauderdale police detective Kathy Collins said.
When Leyritz refused the Breathalyzer, police took blood samples and are awaiting the results.

Yankee Fan's Prized Possession Stolen

If any of you have ever collected baseball cards, programs, yearbooks, etc., you know how devastating it is if they are lost, stolen, or in many cases, thrown out by your Mother (no, mine didn't, though she threatened to many times).

Troy Peterson of Henderson, KY is one such Yankees fan. Henderson's home was recently broken into and his baseball collection was taken. It included his prized possession, a 1952 World Series program, similar to the one pictured to the left, given to him by his great-aunt, who attended the games.

Peterson also lost approximately 30,000 baseball cards, some dating back to the 1950s. It was the 2nd such break in, in 3 weeks.

If you have any information, please contact the Henderson police department.

The Daily Yankeeland

What would the Daily Yankeeland be without a Johan Santana report? Joel Sherman of the NY Post says his sources indicate that the Red Sox are still in the lead to land the lefty. The absurdity of this is that it isn't an election. It doesn't matter who trails or leads. Obviously the Twins are not completely happy right now with any offer or they would have pulled the trigger by now. This has clearly turned into a marathon and not a sprint.

The Yankees have told Robinson Cano to stop playing winter ball, ostensibly because they want an injured calf to completely heal. Cano had just begun playing recently for Estrellas de Orientales in the Dominican and was starting post-season play.

Mr. Holier than Thou, Mike Lupica, whom we have as much respect for as say toe fungus, rips Roger Clemens a new one in today's Daily News. The Lip compares Clemens' defense to that of Tour de France cheat, Floyd Landis (does anyone really think Lance Armstrong was clean?).

The NY Times has an interesting piece on Clemens' attorney, Rusty Hardin. Hardin represented Wade Boggs a few years back, when the Hall of Fame 3rd Baseman was accused of assaulting a flight attendant on the Yankees' charter.

Anyone else as creeped out as I am by this new Derek Jeter cologne ad?

Shays Rips Bud a New One

The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform has January 15 marked on its calendar to hold hearings concerning steroid use and abuse. George Mitchell, Donald Fehr, and Bud Selig are expected to attend, but no ball players are expected to be present.

Committee chairman Christopher Shays (R-Conn) feels there is little is to be learned from having players testify at the hearings, but did take the opportunity to take a shot at Selig.
"Part of it is that major league baseball has been incredibly passive on this issue to the point of condoning it," he said. "And so, who do I think is mostly at fault? The commissioner, frankly, for tolerating it and for not having the guts to step up and say we need changes and if you don't agree with me, then find someone else to run this corrupt process."
Stephen Lynch (D-Mass) hopes the hearings will show just how widespread the problem is. Do we really need a house committee to tell us that?

The subcommittee on commerce, trade and consumer protection will also meet in January (on the 23rd) to discuss the impact of performance enhancing drugs.

More waste of your tax dollars.

What to Do, What to Do?

ESPN's Jayson Stark is reporting tonight that the Twins are willing to go into spring training with Johan Santana still a member of the team. The Twins are still not happy with the players being offered, so they figure they have nothing to lose by waiting.

The thing that could change all that of course is if Santana and his agent press the issue by forcing the Twins' hand.

LaTroy Makes it Official

LaTroy Hawkins has officially signed his contract, one that will guarantee him $3.75 million next season. Now if we could only guarantee he won't stink.

Here's the official news release:
The New York Yankees made it official Thursday, signing veteran reliever LaTroy Hawkins to a one-year deal.

According to Rocky Mountain News, Hawkins will make $3.75 million next season.

The 35-year-old Hawkins went 2-5 with a 3.42 earned run average with five saves in 62 appearances with the NL Champion Colorado Rockies last year.

Over 13 seasons in the majors, he has posted a 56-76 record with 75 saves and a 4.68 ERA in 631 games, which has included 98 starts. He played his first nine seasons in Minnesota and has also had stints with the Cubs, Giants and Orioles.

Winter League Roundup

We now bring you up to date on how the Yankees' players and prospects are doing south of the border.

Dominican

Wilson Betemit (Leones del Escogido)
Hasn't played since we checked in last. Sitting at .286-2-7

Jose Veras (Leones del Escogido)
Has thrown just 1 inning since our last update, but has still not allowed a run (8.2 IP). He's also got 13 Ks.

Edwar Ramirez (
Tigres del Licey)
Still has not appeared in any games since his initial 3.

Robinson Cano (
Estrellas de Oriente)
The Cano Kid is a recent addition to the Estrellas team. He's ripping away at .350 (14-40) with 3 doubles and 3 RBI.

Mexico

Tim Lavigne (
Algodoneros de Guasave)
Lowered his ERA from 2.22 to 1.88 in 28.2 innings, and picked up his 8th save.

Venezuela

Justin Pope
(
Bravos de Margarita)
Has not appeared since our last update. Has allowed just 2 earned runs in 23.1 innings pitched. His 0.94 WHIP and 0.77 ERA, in 22 appearances, are among the league's best.

Alberto Gonzalez (
Bravos de Margarita)
Has been on a tear, raising his average from .304 to .347. Of his 41 hits, 12 are for extra bases.

Francisco Cervelli (
Cardenales de Lara)
Has gone 3-11 to raise his average to .212. Has also drawn 10 walks.

Edwar Gonzalez (
Cardenales de Lara)
Average has dropped to .238. Has batted just 5 times since our last update.

Scott Patterson
(Cardenales de Lara)
We missed this one earlier. For some reason, MiLB has him listed as property of Seattle for some reason. Has a 2-2 record with 2 saves and a 1.69 ERA in 21.1 IP. Patterson has walked just 2 while striking out 17.

Marcos M. Vechionacci (Navegantes del Magallanes)
Hitting .270 with 12 RBI (just 1 since last update). 9 of his 27 hits are for extra bases.

What's really remarkable about the winter leagues are the players that were once in MLB and now still play in the South or Central America in the winter. Guys like Luis Polonia and Fernando Valenzuela. And in Venezuela, on Aguilas de Zulia, you'll find Bill Pulsipher and Rich Garces.

Bobby Abreu
(Leones del Caracas)
Has made just one appearance and was 0-3. No idea whether or not he'll play any more.

Time to Finish the Rice

It's easy to talk about players on your own team when it comes to Hall of Fame consideration, but it means a lot more when you feel a player from another team deserves merit. And as much as Goose Gossage can go on talking about being slighted, no one has been more slighted than the Red Sox' Jim Rice.

For those of you too young to remember the career of the Red Sox' left fielder/DH, he was every bit as intimidating as Manny Ramirez or Big Papi. Maybe even more so than the two combined. The look of determination and concentration in Rice's eyes when he stepped to the plate was unmatched. He would unleash his compact swing like a bolt of lightning and more often than not, the ball would disappear over Fenway's green monster or clang off it's body.

In 16 seasons in Boston, Rice compiled a .298 average with 382 HRs and 1,451 RBI. He topped the 100 RBI mark 8 times, and fell 3 short of a 9th season in triple digits. He hit 39 home runs, a remarkable 3 times, and won the MVP award in 1978 when he put up these gaudy numbers- 46 HRs, 139 RBI, 406 total bases, a .907 OPS, and a .315 average.

Unfortunately for Rice, the Red Sox, for the most part, stunk during his career. He missed the '75 post-season, and made it just twice- the infamous '86 team and an '88 team that lost in the ALCS to Oakland. Rice hit just .159 in the playoffs and though he hit .333 in his only World Series, he failed to drive in a run.

Rice worked hard on his defense and was an adequate left-fielder. His surly attitude with reporters has probably cost him more than anything with H of F voters. Some may say his numbers are below more standard credentials - 400 HRS, 1,500 RBI - but he was dominant in his career, and that span lasted more than a decade.

It's time to do what's right, and put Rice in the hall.

NFL Recap - Week 16

It was a decent week with Big Blue finally clinching a playoff spot. We've been avoiding sports talk radio so we don't have to hear the endless debate about who the Giants should play in Saturday night's game vs. the Patriots.

Blow out city. Unfortunately for the Steelers, Willie Parker's fibula also got blown away. RIGHT

Cowbys -10.5 at Panthers

The Daily Yankeeland

MLB.com has a piece on Don Mattingly's Hall of Fame credentials, or lack thereof. The most common argument by Mattingly for the hall supporters, is the inclusion of Kirby Puckett in Cooperstown. But as is always pointed out, Puckett had 2 WS rings. Unfortunately, we have to agree with those who don't feel Donnie Baseball should be in the hall. There was none better for a 6-year stretch, but a bad back ruined what would have been a sure hall career.

Another former Yankee is running out of time to get into the hall in the conventional manner. Tommy John, who won 288 games in his career, is in his 14th year of eligibility. That means if he doesn't get voted in this year or next, he gets kicked over to the veterans committee. We are on the fence on this one. It seems that players sometimes get punished for longevity. "He won 288, but look how many years it took him". But the fact that he was able to pitch at a high level for that many years is what might be his best argument for enshrinement.

Welcome to LA, Joe Torre. The Yankees ex-skip never encountered this in NY. A float in the Rose Bowl Parade. The Dodgers will have a 35-ft float in this year's parade, and its being put together, in part, by Dodger players and their families.

Bob Raissman, who makes a living by ripping people, takes aim at the YES network and David Justice. It's a lot more fun when he's ripping Mike and the Mad Dog, or Sterling and Waldman.

MSNBC takes a look at the endorsement hit Roger Clemens is expected to take.

Believe it or Not

The Minneapolis Star Tribune's La Velle E. Neal III (now that's a name) believes that Kei Igawa's name has been mentioned as part of talks surrounding Johan Santana. Take that for what it's worth.

The Twins checked in with the Yankees, Red Sox, and Mets prior to breaking for the holidays.
"There’s a belief that he [Igawa] needs to get out of New York to establish himself. And, of course, Twins pitching coach Rick Anderson isn’t afraid of such a project. It’s still believed that Phillip Hughes and Melky Cabrera would lead any package from the Yankees."
The beat goes on.

Father Prior

As rumored, Mark Prior has inked a 1-year deal with his hometown San Diego Padres. The 27-yr old right-hander underwent shoulder surgery on April 24 and isn't expected to be ready for the start of the 2008 season.

Terms of the deal were undisclosed.

Twins Lessen Demands

According to today's NY Times, the Twins have lessened their demands for Johan Santana. In the case of the Yankees, that means accepting Jeffrey Marquez instead of Ian Kennedy. Now if the Yankees could only find a way not to include Phil Hughes too.

Joba Ready From the Start

The Bergen Records' Pete Caldera spoke by Joba Chamberlain about the phenom's transition back to the starting rotation. As you would expect, Joba's feet are firmly planted in reality.

As a starter, "I'm not going to be able to throw 15, 16 scoreless innings, and do what I did" as a reliever, Chamberlain said in a recent telephone conversation. "But I'm going to do whatever it takes to keep my team in the game and go deep in my starts.

"There's going to be times when I get hit around. But you understand that that's a part of it."

This off-season, Joba plans to work on strengthening his legs, mostly by running, and his core. It's hard to tell who will be more excited about this upcoming season, Joba, or Yankees' fans, who get worked up every time the righty enters the game.

Clemens' Investigating, Meeting with Reporters

Roger Clemens' team of attorneys has started its own investigation (hopefully this is more than OJ looking for the real killers) into ties to steroid use by their client, and the Rocket will meet with reporters on January 6, the same night his 60 Minutes interview will air.

Attorney Rusty Hardin said "the investigation of the allegations had found several individuals had not spoken with Mitchell’s investigators, but who were around Clemens during the time in which he is alleged to have been using illegal performance-enhancing drugs".
“We are convinced the conclusions in Mitchell’s report are wrong and are investigating the findings ourselves,” Hardin said in a telephone interview. “At this stage we have uncovered a lot of logical people who we thought Mitchell was going to talk to but never talked to him or his investigators. That’s troubling.”
Clemens' interview with Mike Wallace will take place in his home in Katy, Texas (looking for home court advantage?).

When asked if Clemens would admit that he was injected by McNamee but did not believe at the time it was steroids or human growth hormone, Hardin said Clemens would answer that question if asked by Wallace or reporters.

“The answer to that question and others will be resolved by Roger when he talks,” Hardin said. “He’ll be more than glad to answer those questions to Wallace and others.”

This is so far from being over.

Step up to the Mike

Mike Wallace spoke with the NY Times about his upcoming interview with Roger Clemens. Wallace and 60 Minutes first profiled Clemens back in 2001, and Wallace and the Rocket have become friends since. Wallace has been friends with George Steinbrenner for years, but the 89-year old "correspondent emeritus" will have no problem giving a fair and balanced report.

Clemens' reps reached out to 60 Minutes to do the piece in attempt to continue to do damage control in the wake of the Mitchell Report.
“When we went down there to profile him, we went to his home, I watched him exercise, I watched him work out and he became my friend,” Wallace said. “He trusts me and is going to talk to me and I hope he can answer all the questions on my mind.”
Wallace is already working on his line of questions.

“Why would McNamee say these things he said?” said Wallace, a point that has been asked by others because McNamee was compelled to meet with Mitchell’s investigators by federal prosecutors and could be in legal jeopardy if found to be lying.

“Mitchell is thorough, fair and careful,” Wallace added, “so you have to take that into consideration as well when you are thinking about questions to put to Roger.”

The report will air on CBS, Sunday, January 6.

The Luxury of Losing

The Yankees lost the division series for the 3rd straight year, but that didn't stop them from having to cough up $23.88 million in luxury tax. The bill is almost $3 million less than last season, and nearly $10 million less than 2005.

The only other team with a tab was the Red Sox, who gladly traded $6.06 million for a title. Source

The Daily Yankeeland

It's Monday right? With holidays and weekends interspersed, it's hard to keep track of what day it is. As we previously said with the MLB offices closed until after the new year. There have been a few minor transaction. So Taguchi reached terms with the Phillies. Cliff Politte did the same with the Cardinals. And for some reason David Ortiz doesn't think the Red Sox will get Johan Santana- whatever that's worth. Theo pays you to hit Papi, not think.

Ron Guidry is waiting for a job offer, and even a call by the Yankees to be in spring training. So far he's heard nothing. Not the way to treat a guy who has always brought class to the organization and epitomized what it meant to wear the pinstripes.

We showed you Roger Clemens' video yesterday and mentioned his upcoming 60 Minutes Piece. The Daily News' John Harper thinks it's all going to be a disastrous PR onslaught.

Time to take a look at what's going on in some other Yankee blogs. Peter Abraham, always witty, has a spoof of "'Twas the Night Before Christmas".

Sliding into Home as some new pics of the new stadium construction. The photo of the current and new buildings, side-by-side, is quite eerie.

In case you're still shopping for Xmas gifts, the Yankees Chick has some unusual Yankees oriented ideas for you.

My Internet son over at Scott Proctor's arm has a look at Festivus gifts for the Yankees.

Tommy Byrne, Gone at 87

Former Yankees' pitcher Tommy Byrne died at his home in Wake Forest, N.C. on Thursday. Byrne, 87, suffered from congestive heart failure. The comeback player of the year in 1955, Byrne was a Yankee from 19431-1951 and again from 1954-1957. In between he played for the St. Louis Browns, Chicago White Sox and Washington Senators.

Byrne had an 85-69, 4.11 career record with 12 shutouts. His best winning season was when he went 16-5 in 1955, with a 3.11 ERA. But Byrne was plagued by control trouble, leading the league in walks three times, and hit batters, 5 straight seasons. He was 1-1 in 4 World Series, all with the Yankees (1949, 1955, 1956, 1957).

Byrne is survived by 3 sons, 1 daughter, and 10 grand-children. His wife, Mary Sue, predeceased him in 2002.

Weekend Hot Stove

Happy Holidays from My Pinstripes. Today's the shortest day of the year and there probably won't be much MLB activity, now thru Jan 2nd. The MLB offices will be closed during that period.

Josh Hamilton was a nice pick up for the Rangers, but not at the price. 2 pitching prospects? When will the Rangers front office ever learn? Now there looking at signing Eddie Guardado, who is 37-yrs old with an arm going on 500.

GM Andy MacPhail hasn't heard any offers for Erik Bedard that are to his liking, so the most likely scenario is Bedard still being an Oriole on opening day.

Despite steroid use, the Cubs are still pursuing O's 2nd Baseman, Brian Roberts.

Luiz Vizcaino finally got his deal from the Rockies, a 2-year contract worth $7.5 million.

Rangers Acquire Josh Hamilton

The Rangers have picked up outfielder Josh Hamilton from the Reds in exchange for pitchers Edinson Volquez and Danny Herrera.

Hamilton enjoyed a successful comeback season, after many years of disappointment brought on my drug and alcohol addictions. He was taken in the Rule V draft prior to the '07 season and finally showed the promise that made him a 1st round pick in 1999. Hamilton hit .292-19-47 in just 90 games.

Volquez was 14-6 with 166 strikeouts at 3 minor league levels. The left-handed throwing Herrera struck out 64 in 52 1/3 innings at Double-A.

Tis' the Season

It's the holiday season and the Yankees are giving back to the community. Mariano Rivera, Bobby Abreu, Joba Chamberlain, and Derek Jeter have all been involved in recent charitable activities.

Joba was bringing smiles to the faces of children yesterday at the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center's pediatric unit. The rookie wore a Yankees' blue Santa cap as he talked with the patients and their families, taking pitchers, and signing autographs.
"The opportunities that I had when I was younger were few and far between," Chamberlain said. "I'm blessed to be put in this situation, and I wouldn't be here if it weren't for a lot of people. If I can help one or two people, that makes it all worth it."
Derek Jeter and his Turn 2 Foundation took in a private screening of "The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep," which opens to the public on Christmas day. The kids were treated to a red carpet experience, paparazzi included.
"It's one of the things that I really look forward to," Jeter said. "When I started the foundation, we never thought it would be as big as it is now. We just left Michigan and we have a lot of things going down in Florida. It's a lot bigger and better than I ever imagined."
Mariano Rivera and Bobby Abreu were guests at Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club, where a group of top local students selected by the Fundacion Dominicana de Deportes en Nueva York, got to meet the 2 Yankees as well as former big-leauger, Roberto Alomar.

Mariano told the kids to follow their dreams, and he and Abreu handed out to toys to the kids.
"I love it, because it's great to give back," Rivera said. "I don't believe in just taking."
"To spend time with the kids is what it's all about, and what we really wanted," Abreu said. "We're just looking to get a little smile for those kids. They did a really good job in school, so they get a present."
